UPDATE 9/08: still loving our Memory Foam topper.
Memory Foam...ahhh, those are like words of magic. I was deleting some spam one day in my bulk e-mailbox and I saw something from Overstock.com that caught my eye. It said that they were running a big special which would allow you to save money on Memory Foam. I'd heard of Memory Foam, but wasn't quite sure how good this product was. I also remembered my son saying that when he tried out my mattress, he thought my bed was way too hard, and wondered how could I stand it. I guess I hadn't given it much thought until he said that. True the mattress was getting pretty old. I can't afford an entire new mattress and boxspring right now though. When I saw the ad on overstock.com for linens and sheets, I took a second look. Overstock.com advertised this "memory foam" and showed a photo of a hand which has just been lifted off the memory foam leaving a "memory" print. My sons have the familiar "egg crate foam" on their beds. I think the egg crate style foam is just okay, not great, but they like it. I saw that the ad on overstock.com was ANY size Memory Foam for $79.99. If you order Twin size, you pay $79.99. Likewise, if you order King size, you pay the same, just $79.99...that was the part that sold me. I went ahead and ordered the King size Memory Foam for my mattress. Ordering through overstock.com was simple and painless. I received my order in about 10 days, which was fine. It arrived in a fairly large and long box. When I opened it up, the memory foam was rolled and wrapped in plastic. I read the brief instructions before carefully unrolling it. Last thing I wanted to do was tear it. The directions recommended unrolling it and letting it "air out" from 24 to 72 hours in order to regain its full shape. I placed it on top of my mattress in the morning so it could "relax" for the day. That evening I was really looking forward to my first night sleeping on my new Memory Foam pad. I carefully centered it on top of the mattress and after put some fresh sheets on the bed. It is a fairly cumbersome object to maneuver, which is why I didn't want to tear it while moving it. When I was finished, I tried it out. One word: Heavenly. I guess I never realized how bad my mattress was getting. The memory foam pad I ordered is two inches thick. I chose to buy the two inch pad because I felt the one inch thickness would not make enough of a difference. Memory Foam is preferable over regular foam because it gently contours to your body. When I roll around on the memory foam pad, it seems to move with me, not against me. What you see in the photo of a hand being lifted off the memory foam pad is exactly how it moves. It's soft and pliable. It also does not "creep", but rather stays exactly where I placed it, in the center of the mattress. I was a little worried about it compressing too much and staying that way, but nothing like that has happened. As soon as you lift your body weight off, the memory foam pad regains its original shape, although the instructions say that after time, body impressions can form. The instructions say that you may need deep pocket fitted sheets in order to be able to cover the memory foam pad and mattress. I did not. The instructions teach you how to clean your memory foam pad by spot washing and allowing it to air dry. (You cannot machine wash it at all.) Caution is also to be used if you have an electric blanket. You can use an electric blanket, but need to be sure it is in good working order and is UL approved. This Memory Foam product has a five year warranty and covers only poor workmanship or defective materials. Overstock.com allows 20 days to initiate a return. I was happy too because the shipping and handling was only $2.99, a real bargain. I don't really know about those sleep number beds or adjustable beds or even about waterbeds at all. I guess they're probably all good in their own way. This is a product that won't break your checkbook, has a five year warranty and will give you many a comfortable night's sleep. I've had my Memory Foam pad for about 3 weeks now and am thinking about ordering another for my son. Check it out on: www.overstock.com Just type in "Memory Foam" and you'll be on your way to a dreamy night's sleep. Thanks for reading! ©gkm. .
