Having a kid that is sick is never a pleasant thing; thankfully mine dont get sick that often but when they do it is one extreme or the other. They either get a mild cold or some down with something that is full blown and seconds away from having the whole house quarantined by the local health department. I cant remember exactly when I purchased the first container of Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub but its something that I always have in the medicine cabinet in case it is needed. This isnt just for chest colds, you can use this on a child that is having congestion or a little trouble breathing and it is a lot more pleasant smelling than some of the other similar products on the market. This isnt just for kids, I use this from time to time when I have a chest cold or just want to open up my nose a little. The container says that this shouldnt be applied to the face or near the nostrils but Ill admit it, I smear some under my nose when I have a cold. Oddly enough, I also found that this is great to put under my nose when I am cleaning fish, I cant stand the smell of raw fish [but I love cooked fish] so when I am cleaning it, I smear some under my nose so I wont start wretching. Yeah, Im weird.
Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub For Kids
This little one ounce jar of chest rub is something that I insist on having around the house all year round. You never know when one of the kids is going to catch some mystery flu and need some assistance in breaking up a stubborn cold. This can be used on children two years and older and you can apply it up to three times a day. This works best when you apply it right before bed time but if you have a child that tosses and turns a lot, you might want to wrap something around their throat to keep it from smearing all over the place and possibly getting on their face. This can be applied to the chest or throat area depending on where it will do the most about of good; most of the boys use it on their chest because only girls put it on their throat.
Most of the time this starts to work in about five minutes but if it is a stubborn cough or cold it may take a little longer. When Annabelle had a cold a few weeks ago she didnt want the smelly stuff [Vicks] because she said it made her smell like, well, I wont say what it made her smell like but it was too funny to hear her rant and reasoning for not wanting the Vicks. I figured Id try this out on her to see if it would break up the stuffy nose; Id had enough of the nose whistles and sneezes and knew that I needed to do something about the nose drip before she went through every kleenex in the house. This didnt work as well or as quickly as I had hoped but it did managed to open up her nasal passages in about twenty five minutes. Since she didnt have a chest cold I knew that this wouldnt be as effective as when its used for that purpose but it did give her some relief. This is pretty much the only thing that the boys will use but theyd never admit that in public - to them its a girlie product.
The Smell Factor
Compared to other similar products, this stuff smells awesome. They say that its cherry but to me it smells like cherry and vanilla - but thats just my nose, you might take a whiff of it and smell nothing but cherry. The smell lingers for about ten to fifteen minutes, longer if it gets on clothing or sheets. If this does come in contact with clothing or bedding, wash as usual as soon as possible to avoid staining. To me this stuff smells great and the boys might complain about it being for kids but when they come down with something theyll pick this over Vicks every time. This costs about the same as other child formulated chest rubs [about three dollars a container] but its the smell that makes it more appealing to me.
A Weird Warning ...
When I used to work rave parties as a vendor there were a lot of kids that were using this stuff as a stimulant. Most of the time they went with some type of an adult product like Vicks Vapor Rub but theyd use this because the smell wasnt a dead give away that they were rolling [taking ecstasy]. They place this under their nose to open up their nasal passages to enhance the feelings they are getting from the drugs. If you have a teen that attends raves [even ones that are touted as drug free events] and you see this in their bag or backpack you might want to have a little talk with them. This might sound like something weird to add to a review of a product like this but hey, its better to be safe than sorry - especially when it comes to a drug that could fry your brain the first time you take it.
The Bottom Line
This is one of the best over the counter chest rubs for kids; the smell isnt the least bit offensive and it works quick to help them breathe easier. The only downside to this is that there is no safety lid on it so kids could very easily get into it and consume it thinking that it is candy. You might want to take a minute to explain that this isnt something that should be eaten and that its for adults to apply to them. If this is consumed you will want to contact your doctor or poison control immediately because it contains ingredients that can and will harm the throat and digestive track of children. Take care to keep this away from pets as well, they might be attracted by the scent of it but if they take a lick I am sure they will find the menthol and camphor less than appealing. Make sure you check the expiration date on this, once it hits that date it does start to lose some of the kick thats needed to open up a stuff nose or congested chest; likewise, if you live in an area that has extreme temperature changes youll want to buy a new container of it once a year so you know youll have something that will be as effective as possible when a child comes down with a chest cold.
As always, thanks for the read!
