Disclosure: Please contact your pediatrician before using any medication, even over the counter medications can be potentially dangerous to a child depending on their condition or medical history. Your doctor will know best if this or any other medication will be safe for your child.
Back in December, my then three year old daughter began a five month stint of being sick almost non-stop. She was getting one cold after another and had so much trouble with a stuffy nose and a cough interrupting her sleep time. On the advice of my daughter's pediatrician, I decided to try Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub for Kids to try and relieve some of the symptoms that plagued her at night.
Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub for Kids is an aromatic colds care aid that contains an external nasal decongestant and cough suppressant. The aroma that it provides reminds me of a toned down Vick's Vapor rub smell with some added cherry fragrance. It is definitely more pleasant smelling than Vick's Vapor Rub to both my daughter and myself.
The active ingredients that make this topical medication relieve symptoms associated with the common cold in children are as follows:
Camphor 4.7%
Natural Menthol 2.7%
Eucalyptus Oil 1.2%
In addition to a list of four inactive ingredients, the product states a fragrance as a component of this product. I assume this is where the cherry aroma comes into play.
Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub for Kids is very easy to use, simply rub a thick layer across your child's chest and throat. For the product to work at its optimum level, it is important for the child to wear loose fitting clothing to allow the vapors to freely reach the mouth and nose.
When I use this product on my daughter, I apply a generous amount to her throat and chest, rubbing it in and then dress her in looser fitting night clothes. I tuck her into bed and within 15 minutes she seems to be resting much easier. The product can be applied up three times daily but I mainly used this product only once a day, as a nighttime aromatic aid. The one application at night was ample enough to provide my daughter with many hours of rest, it calmed her cough and seemed to clear up her congestion to a degree.
The aspects that I liked best about this product are the pleasant cherry aroma and the fact that this product is more of a cream. It spreads easily without being goopy and sticky. My daughter did not mind me applying this product to her throat and chest area. She fought me tooth and nail when I tried to apply the Vick's Vapor Rub on her.
As with any medication, whether it be prescription or an over the counter medication, there are warnings that must be followed. The manufacturer states the following:
1)If a child is under two years of age-consult a physician first
For external use only, avoid contact with eyes. Do not take by mouth or place in nostrils.
2)If a rash or a skin irritation occurs be sure to discontinue use immediately.
3)If a cough persists for more than one week, tends to reoccur or is accompanied with a fever, rash or persistent headache-consult a doctor.
4)Do not use for persons with asthma or emphysema unless prescribed by doctor to do so.
5)In case of accidental ingestion, contact Poison Control Center immediately.
6)Keep this and all drugs out of reach of children.
Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub for Kids is available in a small plastic container that contains one ounce of the white cream. While this size may seem small to some, the product really does go quite far. I used this product many times and still have a half of container left. One thing I would like to point out is that this product does not come with a child proof cap. For this reason, it is imperative that you keep this product out of reach from your children like the manufacturer states.
Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub for Kids provided my daughter with some nights of restful sleep and I will purchase it again when and if my daughter needs it again. I much prefer this method of topical relief versus medicating her with other over the counter medications orally.
