DudeFace's Full Review: Piers Anthony - Bio Of A Space Tyrant: Mercenary
Bio of A Space Tyrant is a great book by one of the great authors in science fiction.
Part of me wishes I hadn't read it.
A narrative by Hope Hubris, future Space Tyrant, he tells the tale of his families escape from indentured servitude on Gamamead. A departure from Piers Anthony light hearted and comedic style, Bio of A Space Tyrant is one long, tragic, bummer of a story; chronicling the Hubris families escape from their home world and journey to the promised freedom of the Jupiter colonies.
During their trek, they are set upon by pirates, resort to cannibalism, are turned away at the border of the promised land, decide to invade a research post for supplies, and forced to watch family members raped and murdered. It doesn't get much grimmer then this.
Now I don't need a happy ending every time, but it is nice to see the sun come out from time to time. The long line of tragedies got so overwhelming, I actually put the book back on the shelf. It was months before curiosity got the best of me and I finished it off. This is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of.
Written in the classic style of the grand masters, where the hows of the science are as vividly described as the whos of the characters. You can easily see yourself aboard the ship, lost in the Jupiter system. Bio of a Space Tyrant is a powerful story. Be warned though, this isn't a happy tale.
The Bads: Dark and disturbing.
The Goods: Vivid imagery. Characters to care for.
Does our hero make it to safety? Only the story will tell.
