| loves2run's Full Review: Met Rx Food Bars |
If you have read my other reviews, you will know that I am in training for a marathon. Because of this training my consumption of nutrition bars has increased. About the same time that I started training, I started my job as Nanny to two of my nephews. I have to say I find such joy in taking care of them on the days their parents work. However, I did forget how hectic it could be taking care of a seven- month old and a five-year old. Trying to keep the baby fed, changed and entertained and the five-year old, fed, entertained and also homeschool him, it got to where I forgot to fed myself. I know how unhealthy skipping meals is for a person, so I knew this pattern could not continue. Thus, I started purchasing protein bars to use as a meal replacement and to keep my energy up. I have been surprised at the amount of bars offered.
I will start by reviewing the MET-RX® FOOD BAR.
WHY I BOUGHT THIS PARTICULAR BAR
I have to admit, the first thing that drew me to the MET-RX® FOOD BAR was the weight of this bar. This bar weighs 3.53 ounces or 100 grams. Most of the other bars were less than 3 ounces. The flavors available seemed appealing to me so that was another plus. Even though I didn’t like the taste of the MET-RX® SOURCE ONE bars, I decided to give MET-RX® FOOD BAR a chance, I reminded myself about my feelings toward the original Clif Bar® and the Luna™ made by Clif Bar®. I do not like the Clif Bar® but love the taste of the Luna™ bar. So, I picked up the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Fudge Brownie flavors.
TASTE TEST
The next day when I finally found time to eat, I pulled out the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor bar. Upon closer inspection of the label I noticed instructions on “How to Open Your MET-Rx Food Bar”. I am sorry, but that struck me as funny, but then I do remember how tough it is getting some of these bars open especially during a marathon when you are tired, hungry and sweaty. Okay, as I got the bar open as per instructions, I pull it completely out of the wrapper. The bar had the coloring of cookie dough, which was a good sign, or so I thought. I eagerly took my first bite and knew this definitely was not cookie dough but what did I expect, unlike cookie dough, this bar is supposed to be good for me. I found the bar to be really dry and chewy. Not the take your fillings out kind of chewy like an original PowerBar®, but very close. I do not recall it having an overwhelming vitamin taste, but it did leave an aftertaste that I found to be unpleasant. Another thing, there were only three chocolate chips in the bar. I had to suffer through the whole bar to find them as they were in the very last bite.
I am a very frugal person who hates to waste anything. Being I had the Fudge Brownie flavor of the MET-RX® FOOD BAR sitting in my cabinet, I decided it couldn’t be any worse tasting than the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, so I ate it a few days later. It was just as dry and chewy and left the same aftertaste.
MEAL REPLACEMENT
Taste –AWFUL, but the MET-RX® FOOD BAR did well at stopping the hunger and giving me a full feeling till dinner. The bar is full of vitamins and has 26 grams of protein. Too bad the taste isn’t better.

FINAL THOUGHTS
The MET-RX® FOOD BAR did fill me up and from the nutritional standpoint seems to be a good bar, however, I was not pleased with the taste of the bars. Now, it wasn’t a “I would rather starve than eat this bar” kind of taste, but I know there are other bars out there that taste a whole lot better. I just can’t see myself recommending this bar to my walking team or anyone else for that matter.
