A Method in Your Cleaning

Written: Nov 09 '07
Pros:Works well. Pleasing scent.
Cons:Might cost more than some chemical cleaning concoctions.
The Bottom Line: This is one of those "green", feel good products that actually works. It's worth a try.

We like using cleaning products in our home that won’t harm our pets, harm us, or harm the Earth. We like using simple, nontoxic tools to clean the messes and grime that occur naturally in our home in the course of daily living. We like cleaning products that smell good naturally and leave a subtle pleasing scent behind, a little exclamation point on a task successfully completed.
It’s no surprise then that we like Method cleaners and support the philosophy of its company’s founders.

Method Tub and Tile Cleaner

Our supply of cleaner is packaged in an opaque aquamarine colored plastic bottle with a adjustable stream, trigger spray cap. The bottle holds 28 ounces of clear liquid, the blue label with a bathroom tile background banding it complementing and completing the color scheme. A unique bottle shape and small m’s embossed on each side of the squared bottom makes for an attractive and thoughtful design. For some users the initial weight of the contents may prove uncomfortable until the heft lessens with use.

· Contents – (from the Method web site)corn/coconut-derived and biodegradable surfactant blend
citric acid potassium hydrate
corn alcohol non-toxic and biodegradable solvent
fragrance oil blend color preservative
· (under 0.1%)purified water
(from the label) - soap scum dissolver, nonionic surfactant, naturally derived solvents, essential oil fragrance
I think it strange that the ingredient lists aren’t identical.
Directions – Spray and wipe. It’s safe to use on surfaces water alone won’t harm. It works by absorbing dirt rather than chemically degrading it.
It is not necessary to rinse a surface after using method's products since the formulas are non-toxic, non-hazardous and safe. With the spray cleaners, simply spray and wipe.

Caution – Despite its mission statement, Method products are not totally benign and should be kept away from children (just common sense). In case of contact with eyes, flush well with water. If swallowed, drink a full glass of water and contact a physician. If you’re already a physician, contact yourself.

Method in Action

Mrs. Spudman was the first to use Method Tub and Tile in her bathroom and was very pleased with the results. She liked how it removed soap scum from her tub and shower surround. The chrome fixtures on tub and shower sparkled and were spot free. She also found the “eucalyptus mint scent” pleasing.

Ever the skeptic, I agreed to try her newly discovered miracle cleaner for myself, not expecting to be overwhelmed by the hype or the pretty packaging. I first sprayed it on the fiberglass enclosure in my bathroom. It left streaks on the wall as it trickled downward, gravity driven. I sprayed again to spread the cleaner evenly and equalize the cleaning power on the wall’s surface. After wiping with a wet rag, I dried the surfaces with a dry towel. The walls and chrome frame of the tub doors looked great, clean and shining. They even had a smooth, slick feel to them. A week later I repeated the drill and the surfaces looked even better.

I used Method tub and tile on the glass shower doors, the bathtub, the bathroom sink and fixtures and the exterior of the commode. All targets looked good afterwards, even the sink which is long past its prime.
The ceramic tile floor looked especially good and did not have a dangerously slick surface afterwards. I used the cleaner in moderation just in case, and being a tightwad I like to make things last anyway.

And

Several weeks after I’d written this review and tucked it into hibernation, Mrs. Spudman tried Method Tub and Tile Cleaner on a hair dye stain (courtesy of our spudette), a quarter sized spot annoyingly conspicuous on the middle of the tub enclosure wall, and seemingly a permanent fixture. I’d already tried every cleaner in the house on it. Incredibly the spot is now gone.
That’s impressive!

The Spuds both like this flavor of the Method cleaning line. I might buy it again; Mrs. Spudman definitely will.

I don’t like that the ingredients listed are vague and fuzzy. Why isn’t the maker more specific and direct?

I also don’t care for an opaque container that makes it difficult to determine how much product remains in the bottle. Holding the container up to a bright light seems to work, but that ploy shouldn’t be necessary.

Method’s web site is a pain to navigate and too full of fluffy, meaningless terminology.
Method Tub and Tile Cleaner actually works pretty well and is certainly worth a test drive.

The makers of Method hate dirty surfaces as much as anyone, but don’t want to compound the dirtiness around us with an arsenal of chemicals that in the little picture work well, but in the larger scheme of things compound and worsen the Earth’s troubles with their omnipresent, long lasting, unnatural residues. Method cleaners contain naturally derived ingredients and fragrances. They work effectively, a gentle touch on home surfaces, safe on the user and safe on our environment. Method cleaners are biodegradable, nontoxic, and never tested on animals. Yes, you can buy more powerful cleaners, but are they worth the costs?

Also available from Method are: cleaning wipes, specialty surface cleaners, dish cleaning products, hand and body, laundry, aircare, microfiber products, omop, and a detox kit.
