LindsayBW's Full Review: Mi Reflejo by Christina Aguilera
Although Stripped was highly anticipated for three years by Christina fans, she didn't leave us empty handed while we waited. Along with her other side project, My Kind Of Christmas, Mi Reflejo was a small bonus for Christina fans. But no one realized how much of a bonus we were actually receiving with Mi Reflejo.
Because this was not meant to be a full album from Christina, unfortunately, it includes full versions of her five hit singles. Genio Atrapado is not a bad transition. It keeps the same vibe and energy of the original, just... well, it's in Spanish. Ven Conmigo (Solamente Tu) does the same by maintaining all that the original has. Por Siempre Tu and Mi Reflejo also transcend nicely and keep the same emotion their English counterparts had. The only one that seems out of place is Una Mujer, which loses What A Girl Wants's energy and seems somehow rough and out of place on the album.
But the real gems on this album are the six other tracks. Christina doesn't sound bad singing in Spanish at all. She pulls it off as if she speaks it fluently (she doesn't). Cuando No Es Contigo is the only one of these moderately up tempo. While it does sound kind of cheesy (somewhat reminiscent of video game music... yikes), it does have a great melody and that voice just shines throughout, better than perhaps any of the uptempo tracks on her debut. El Beso Del Final is a remarkable ballad with a chorus that's almost haunting. It reels you in and doesn't let you go until it's over. Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti is a grand, showcasing Christina's vocals and just possessing a listening in it's pop splendor. Si No Te Hubiera Conocido, a duet with Luis Fonsi, has a gorgeous melody, but in my opinion, is somewhat ruined by Fonsi's prescense, as Christina's voice has, and always will, shines better solo. Still, the song is great to listen to as Christina gives a powerful performance to a great tune. The best of these, though, is Contigo En La Distancia. This ballad is so packed with emotion, I, the master of singing along, just can't because of her tremendous voice. I seriously can't drive in a car and listen to it because I simply have to close my eyes and listen to her gorgeous pipes in this song. If anyone ever doubted Christina's vocal talent, this song should knock them on their backs.
Although you can't understand a word of this album (well, if you're me anyway), it just proves that Christina is a marvelously talented singer. Because although you don't know the words, her emotion helps make it her own, makes you want to cry with her. Even if the song was saying something about goat cheese, I would still tear every time because of that gorgeous emotional soulful voice Christina has.
Mi Reflejo was unfairly overlooked as just a side project, when what it really was was a testament, that no matter what language, Christina Aguilera is always enjoyable.
In less than a year from the day that she burst onto the world musical landscape, Christina Aguilera has scored two #1 smash hit singles, watched sale...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
