Michelin LTX Mud and Snow Tire for Light Trucks

Written: Dec 04 '01
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Handling and Control:
Pros:The best light truck for mileage as well as ride and comfort.
Cons:Moderate rain and snow traction.
The Bottom Line: For the customer that wants the best ride and mileage light truck tire on the market this is the one if money isn't an object.

The LTX M/S is the best mileage tire built in the light truck sizes. If the weather permits you to wear them down to the last 2/32nds with proper maintenance you can see over a 100,000 miles. I have seen many sets do so including a full size Tahoe that put on 115,000.
Proper maintenance includes rotating tires every three thousand miles. Checking the balance atleast every 10,000 miles. Proper air pressure should be maintained which is determined by the vehicles weight and driving habits. Air pressure should be checked atleast once a month. Tires lose 1 psi per month and air pressure changes with the temperature. Also inspect the wear watching for anything out of the ordinary.
Now while the M/S is a great mileage tire it does have some drawbacks. First of all it was designed for highway use with very little traction in mind. Even worse the more you wear it down the traction depletes quicker than the tread does. The shorter the tread blocks become the more solid blocks they form.
Dry handling is excellent so if you live in a warm weather climate it is a great choice. If your winters include snow I would recommend a traction tire for the winter.
Michelin tires in general cost a bit more than the others on the market. This is no exception but the treadlife is definitely worth it.
