Pros: More flavor than most macro-brewed domestics.
Cons: Half-assed attempt at a true dark lager.
The Bottom Line: Just not a good beer. If Michelob wants to make a bock, then they should at least do it right. This beer is a tasteless imitation.

| lpteague's Full Review: Michelob Amber Bock |
I've gone out of my way to applaud Michelob on its specialty line in the past. I think any time a large brewery such as Anheuser-Busch makes an effort to produce better beer, it should be commended. I'm a huge fan of Michelob's Honey Lager, and I've enjoyed their Hefeweizen and Black & Tan as well. Naturally, I wanted to give the famed Amber Bock a try.
According to Michelob's website, Amber Bock contains 166 calories and 5.2% ABV per 12oz serving.
Upon opening a fresh bottle of Amber Bock (I do appreciate the Born On Date), I was greeted by a weak aroma of malt and no hops to speak of. I really don't think Amber Bock smells any differently than a regular Michelob. The color of the beer, on the other hand, is pretty impressive for an Anheuser-Busch product. Behind Michelob's Black & Tan, I think this is the darkest beer in the lineup.
The taste is extremely disappointing. As is common with macro-brews, this beer is virtually void of hops. No bitterness whatsoever. The barley is roasted darker, but the inclusion of rice just dulls the taste entirely. This beer doesn't even offer the slightly enjoyable sweetness that is found in other Michelob products. If you think drinking Michelob Ultra is like eating paper, then drinking Amber Bock is like eating cardboard.
I don't like this beer, so I wouldn't want to pair it with much of anything. I suppose it would work with pizza or any other fast food.
I've heard loads of people speak very highly of Amber Bock, but it just doesn't do it for me. I guess if all I ever drank was Bud, Amber Bock would be an exciting change. For true beer lovers that enjoy sampling many types of beer, you'll soon discover that this is just a darker macro-brew, without that old-fashioned macro-brew taste that we've grown to love. If you want a good bock, please look elsewhere.
