| HawgWyld's Full Review: Michelob Amber Bock |
Michelob Amber Bock, like other beers marketed by Anheiser-Busch, is mass-produced and tastes like it. Here's a brew that will annoy "beer purists" to no end as it's thin, has no after taste and isn't even a real bock. Just imagine a typical bottle of Michelob made with dark roasted malt, and you've got a pretty good idea of Michelob Amber Bock.
That being said, this isn't bad at all for a beer that goes for around five bucks a six-pack. Amber Bock is light in body and doesn't have the typical "bitterness" found in a dark beer. The taste is sweet, but there is a bit of bitterness due, I suppose, to the way the malt is processed. Other than that, though, it tastes like a typical Anheiser-Busch product -- smooth, refreshing, none to complex, rather enjoyable and with plenty of rice used in the brewing process.
Now, I know that none of us who know anything about beer are supposed to enjoy these "mass produced" things, but I enjoy this beer. This isn't a beer produced by a "microbrewery," but Anheiser-Busch tries to market it that way. Don't believe them. Don't believe for a second that this is a thick, complex dark beer as that's not the case at all. Like I said, imagine Michelob brewed with dark, roasted malt, and that's pretty much what Amber Bock tastes like.
This beer, though, is a good "party beer" -- who would turn their nose up at a bottle of this stuff? It's not harsh at all and, like I said, goes down smoothly and cleanly. Better yet, you can keep a party floating on this stuff for very little money. Let the guests bring the expensive stuff, but keep plenty of Amber Bock on hand to supply happy merry-makers. They won't be disappointed, for the most part, and you'll save a few bucks on beer.
This, also, is a good beer to pick up for those "on the cheap" who want a decent beer, but aren't in the mood to lay out eight or nine bucks for a six of them. Amber Bock is good enough to please most folks, and doesn't cost much. There's something to be said for that, whether it's a true bock or not.
As for food, this beer goes with about anything. Whether you're eating a good steak or one of those frozen pizzas, Amber Bock will be a good choice. Salty foods, foods with strong flavors and just about anything is good with an Amber Bock.
So, give this little beer a chance, but don't expect just too much. You might not like it if typical Anheiser-Busch brews are your game as it's a bit fuller and thicker, but not by much. If you're looking for a premium bock or dark brew, too, pass up this beer. If, however, you want a satisfying beer that can be had for cheap, you could do a lot worse than Amber Bock.
