| PALWalrus's Full Review: Michelob Amber Bock |
Like so many others who have commented on this beer I have been harrassed and hassled into trying this particular beer because many seem to see this type of beer as the future of beer itself!!! I think that my friends see this as some kind of crossover between the bulk produced and very light domestic beers and the darker, fuller flavored microbrews and imported ales. I find this hard to believe but was willing to give anything a try, at least once and possibly more so here we go...
If you're going to build a time machine, do it with some style...
The bottle is the classic Michelob shape and style with foil and more prominent label stating that this is infact an Amber Bock. I have always liked the shape of the Michelob bottles, if not the content. Slightly curveous and with upmarket, European style foiling. You at least feel like you might be in for a treat.
Is that the flux capacitor?...
When you flip the top off the bottle and take that initial sniff you do get a very nice aroma. For me the malt was the biggest initial smell with a good dollop of honey thrown in for good measure. The machinery seemed to be in place for a really good trip. Pouring the contents also looked promising, the beer formed a nice head with good medium to dark coloration and viscosity. The lips were definitely moistening with anticipation...
1.21 Gigawatts? Is he crazy?...
The first sip opened with great promise, the initial flavor was sweet with the honey taste hitting the tip of the tongue and telling the rest of the mouth to wake up and expect company. The malt said hello and introduced itself to the mouth gently, there followed a slight nutty flavor but there it stopped. The flavor felt like it was trying to expand but never quite made it. Almost like expecting a room full of guests and only three people turn up. The finish was also disappointing, with the honey hanging on too long and not letting a cleaner bitter finish develop and maintain the interest...
Can we get this thing up to 88 m.p.h?...
I don't know if we can or not...I tried serving this at all temperatures from cold to cool to slightly warmer and it just didn't open out. While more flavorful than the normal offerings from AB, this beer is still not quite in top gear, we could probably get it up to 60 perhaps 65. Perhaps I am being overly harsh here but this beer got such high praise before I tasted it that the anticipation may have been too much. It is not unpleasant and if offered it to drink at a party I probably would drink it, it just may not be my first choice.
As an accompaniment for food I could see this beer working really well, it doesn't have the power to stand on its own, but with traditional bar food and a cheese board it may work very well.
On the whole not a technological breakthrough, but better than the normal and showing some potential...
