| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Michelob Black & Tan |
To satisfy the craft- beer lovers of the world, the Michelob Specialty Beer Division offers Michelob Black and Tan. This beer is, I will have to admit, a pretty good tasting beer and a decent representation of the Black and Tan style (the bottled version, that is). They combine porter and lager to produce a good tasting, flavorful beer product.
Basic Characteristics:
Michelob Black and Tan has a very dark brown color. It has a sweet, roasted malt aroma and a good taste overall. The predominant flavor is the taste of roasted malt.
I must say that I am impressed with Anheuser- Busch! This is about the only A-B product I have ever tasted that has a good, malty body. This flavor is created by combining chocolate, pale, and caramel malts and, unfortunately, rice. That's the one thing I wish they would have excluded from this beer. If they had left the rice off of the list of ingredients, using more malts instead, the flavor would have been even better. Old habits die hard, I suppose.
In addition to the malt, they add Hallertau, Willamette, and Cascade hops. The end result is a rich, malty beer, with a clean finish and a hint of coffee taste at the end. The aftertaste is one of roasted malt, and it's very good.
Food Compatibility:
This black and tan would go very well with a good roast or steak. The mixture of the porter and lager makes a good complement to meat dishes. I would also recommend serving this beer with certain desserts, like dark chocolate cake or pecan pie.
Closing Thoughts:
Before you snub this product because it's produced by Anheuser- Busch, keep in mind that it's nothing like Budweiser, Busch, or even regular Michelob. The list of ingredients proves it. Michelob Black and Tan is a rich, malty beer, and it's better than most products in the beer isle, especially for the price. It puts the other Anheuser- Busch products to shame. Try it, you'll like it!
