Pros: it's beer
Cons: where's the beer taste?
The Bottom Line: If you're on a low-carb diet and have to drink beer, then choose a different beer and make up the carbs somewhere else in your diet.

| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Michelob Ultra Tap |
In our house, things are pretty much the polar opposite of "normal" houses. I'm the one who knows the rules for baseball, soccer, and football and is responsible for instilling those very important lessons upon the children of the house. I am also the more discriminating beer drinker in the house.
Since my Manly Man and I embarked on a low-carbohydrate diet earlier this year, we were both very happy to hear that Anheuser-Busch had developed a low-carb beer, Michelob Ultra. My first sighting of it came in a supermarekt in North Carolina, and I picked up a six-pack of bottles.
Michelob Ultra contains 2.6 grams of carbohydrates per 12 oz. serving. Compare that to Coors Light or Corona Light, both of which contain 5 grams of carbohydrates per 12 oz. serving. The question, however, is if the taste is at least the equivalent of these other two light beers.
The label says to serve the beer very cold, and I refrigerated the beer for 24 hours before trying it. I can't tell you about the color, since being the refined woman that I am I drink my beer straight from the bottle, and this bottle is a dark brown.
However, what I can tell you about is the taste. I can tell you about it in one simple word: awful.
I've never been big on soda, and have a great distaste for carbonation. In beers, however, I have found that when the carbonation is at a certain level, it adds a bit of tang to the flavor. In the case of Michelob Ultra, it would seem that carbonation is the dominant flavor, rather than the accent. Beyond the immediate over-carbonation, I could taste very little actual beer flavor. It actually seemed like I was drinking tonic water. Anheuser-Busch advertises that Michelob Ultra has "a clean taste," but someone forgot to shut off the washing machine and it washed the taste away!
I didn't even finish the bottle I'd opened. However, I brought the rest of the 6-pack home for my Manly Man to try (since he hadn't made the trip with us). Wouldn't you know, he liked the beer just fine and finished the 6-pack in less than a week.
Michelob Ultra is brewed by combining barley, grain, hops and a yeast strain. The mashing process is extended to achieve the lower carbohydrate and calorie count. Obviously, this also takes some of the flavor out.
I personally don't see the point in drinking this beer. I'd rather stick with a sugar-free, no-carbohydrate, non-alcoholic drink than subject myself to Michelob Ultra again. However, for someone who is on a low-carbohydrate diet and needs a "beer fix" or an "alcohol fix" (alcohol content is 4.2% by volume), I imagine this fits the bill. I would still prefer a different light beer that has more flavor and just cut the carbs in a different place to allow for it.
I dedicate this review to my Manly Man who will obviously drink anything labeled BEER. As for me, I'll take a Sam Adams with the extra carbs.
