Pros:Good taste, not so filling, no more beer goggles
Cons:No more beer goggles
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Ultra. The taste is good, the lower calories and carbs are good, and the I really had no complaints.
As a guy who likes beer, one of three things typically occurs when consuming; 1) I get drunk and feel like I was run over by Rosanne the next morning 2) Beer goggles make an appearance and I end up going home with Rosanne 3) I only drink a couple of beers and end up feeling like I ate Rosanne. Hopefully, I am not the only who ends up with these feelings.
The new Michelob Ultra seems to take care of all three problems. First of all, Ultra makes it tough to get drunk. Yes, if you choose to drink a keg or two you will get drunk. Most of us would not choose to do this (At least not post- college). What makes the Ultra so difficult to reach the tipsy stage is that it has less alcoholic content than a typical Michelob. Whether this is good or bad depends on what kind of night you want to have.
Secondly, the inability to get drunk also means fewer nights spent with Rosanne. I cannot stress the the kudos that I give Michelob for this discovery.
Thirdly, I have never been able to shake the "full" feeling that often occurs after drinking a few beers. The feeling comes from three aspects; carbs, calories, and, well, too much beer. The cool thing about Ultra is that it has fewer calories than a typical Michelob (95 calories versus 155 for the regular and 120 for the lite) and also fewer carbs (2.6 grams versus 13.5 for the regular and 8.3 for the lite). Hence, you can drink a lot of the Ultra and not feel as if you are going to pop. Of course, the more you drink the more full you will feel.
So, Michelob Ultra helps you stay sober, prevents beer goggles, and leaves one feel less full, but what about the taste? I mean taste is why we drink beer, right? I liked the taste, but will warn you that I like Lite beers in general. What this means is that I do not mind the taste of Miller Lite or Coors Lite. The reason this is important is that the Ultra has the same texture of a Coors Lite while having a little bit more taste. Not bad at all.
The final question is whether or not the Ultra allows us to drink a six pack each night and not end up looking like Rosanne. I am still working on this one. The Ultra is new enough that I need couple of months of a six pack a night before advising as to whether or not my waist has expanded to Volkswagen proportions.
One thing to keep in mind with the Ultra is that we may be looking at nothing more than a fad. Remember the days of Red Bull? The marketers have discovered that us beer drinkers are not the brightest bunch and feel that every decade or so they can jam a new idea into our big 'ol guts and charge a little more for the idea. Michelob Ultra is not alone in the "diet beer" category. Miller Lite and other breweries are concocting their brands of "diet beer" and you can be sure that you will see the low carb beers pushed as the next hot thing.
The bottom line is that if you are looking for a beer that taste good, is truly less filling, and can be enjoyed, then you will like Michelob Ultra.
