It's the latest craze and boy is it a big one! Every single kid on my block, including a five year old neighbor (go figure), has somehow managed to talk their parents into buying "the silver streak!"
Luckily, my five year old has not yet asked for one, but she definitely loves to watch the neighborhood kids zoom down our sidewalks. I'm sure the only reason she is holding out, thank my lucky stars, is that so far no one has put a big Barbie emblem on the footboard. Shhhhh! Don't even hint the suggestion to the manufacturers.
It zips fast, looks very appealing, and appears to be sturdy and balanced enough to keep even the big kids from falling. I have yet to see anyone crash. (Although that would have been a real sight for the dad I recently saw gliding down my street.) As for it's durability, it's probably not even an issue as by the next summer, it will probably lie folded on some garage shelf waiting for it's afterlife of garage sale mania.
Now for the ugly in my opinion. The kids I see riding this thing have real attitude. Even the little kids must think they are invincible as I rarely see one wearing a helmet. Granted, this is a parent problem and not a manufacturer problem, but it's a real accident waiting to happen.
However, I won't totally dismiss the advertisers who market this product. Each week, there's a huge ad in the paper by our local department store of some "cool" kid, in his baggy jeans and bleached top hair, riding the scooter, without a helmet. And, that folks, is just "not cool!"
If your kid just has to have the hot trend of this summer's lazy days (and prices have definitely dropped since it's introduction), by all means fulfill their fantasy. But, please make sure it's not his last dream and make him wear a helmet, cool or not.
