First introduced in June of 2001, Bratz dolls have become increasingly popular. In fact a recent newspaper article in the Seattle Times stated: “Bratz, whose five-character multiethnic line has supplanted Barbie as the nation's No. 1 best-selling fashion doll for six months in a row through September…”.
These dolls sport a notable tween appearance and are gaining favor from children 4 years of age and up. In actuality many parents who previously balked at Barbie paraphernalia are accepting of the Bratz line. Recent shopping excursions show empty shelves, and rumor has it that Bratz will be appearing under numerous trees and in multiple stockings this Christmas season. I know that within our family this line up has grasped the attention of a 7-year-old girlie and taken a ‘high request’ upon her Christmas wish list.
Young consumers are impressed with MGA BRATZ Dolls and many previously ‘Barbie skeptical’ parents appear to be as well. MGA Entertainment is feeding the trend with additional product releases and cleaver ‘limited edition’ marketing. My youngest daughter continues to show interest in this fashion conscience line.

Like her counterparts MGA Beach Party Jade 2002 BRATZ Doll is appreciated by fashion conscience girls. Her ad campaign states: “My friends call me "Kool Kat" because I love cat!”. She arrives sporting an updated, beach appropriate ensemble.
From the top of her head to the bottom of her shoes, she measures approximately 10”. She is constructed of molded plastic. Her arms pivot from the shoulder point, and her hands are posed with thumbs extended slightly away from the palms of her hands. Her legs pivot from hip point. Although her knees don’t bend, her legs are pliable.
Her face has prominent features, including plump lips and defined eyes. If you compare MGA Beach Party Jade 2002 BRATZ Doll to traditional Barbie’s you’ll notice that Bratz have a wider face. Jade has ivory skin, brown eyes, and dark brown hair. Her hair is waist length, arriving with a bang line and a portion of the long tresses pulled into a ponytail. As my youngest daughter mentioned, “I love her lip color, and look she has lipliner on.” Watch out Shantel… Missy is likely to throw some beauty contributions your way. *wink*
Rather than putting shoes onto molded plastic feet, the entire foot removes from the legs of these dolls. Their legs have a peg type of bottom that snaps into the shoe mechanism. These are easy for children to change and they stay on.
Child Reaction
Marisa is especially fond of MGA Beach Party Jade 2002 BRATZ Doll. Certainly the majority of this is because Jade has dark brown hair and brown eyes, like my daughter. When I asked Missy what drew her attention to Jade, she told me that she really liked her capri pants, the y-strap halter, her lip color, and the purple shopping bag. She also shared with me that she thinks the string halter is too hard to put on (I tend to agree considering that it is slightly time consuming to tie the neck string. In addition the web style belt is hard to cinch. Regardless of the two minor mentions… Marisa likes MGA Beach Party Jade 2002 BRATZ Doll.
Final Recommendation
I recommend MGA Beach Party Jade 2002 BRATZ Doll for the fashion conscience girl. Because the 2nd outfit is challenging to put on I feel that this set is proper for girls 6 and up (versus the 4 manufacturer mention). My initial response to the Bratz line wasn’t exactly one of favor and honestly it took my youngest a substantial time to show interest. However when it hit… watch out! The talk amidst parents is that these dolls, the accessories, the car, and the spa are the GIFTS for this holiday season. Considering the bare shelves at local stores, I think this statement is true. If your child happens to be asking for these items I would shop early.
