I just purchased my second Micro Innovations webcam from Staples. Came to about 5 bucks after rebate! I have two of these at home now.
This is a great first camera - it seems to be of high quality and it works well. I have had no trouble with the unit.
The lens seems very good. It can focus down to about an inch! It also has stops on the focus ring, so you won't unscrew the lens. I have also owned two other brands of webcams and this was a serious problem.
The software suite is quite good. It is entry level (what do you expect for five bucks?) But does a nice job of capturing video, etc.
The camera is a plain beige color, but it came with three silly colored faceplates (I'm sure the kids will love 'em) Blue, Green and Red to match your computer?? I don't use any of them.
This webcam has a sturdy base with a rubber bottom for non-slip. This is another problem that I have had with other cameras - the base looks cool, but the tension from the cable pulls the camera off of the monitor. Not so with the Micro Innovations unit.
The only other thing I found lacking was the cable length, but I went on eBay and bought a 10' USB extension cable, and I'm set now.
Compared to the two other webcams I have tried (I/O Magic and IREZ) this camera is at the top of the heap for quality and fucntionality. Especially for around five bucks at Staples.
