Microsoft 4000 Computer Keyboard. Does the Microsoft 4000 Keyboard work with a Mac?

Pros:Nothing to install, ergonomic style, has a number key.
Cons:Larger than Mac specific keyboards, expensive.
The Bottom Line: A good option for those on a Mac that like the PC keyboard format.
I bought this in conjunction with my Mac Mini because my old wireless USB keyboard did not work with my Mac Mini. This board I am reviewing is also one of the few third party boards that does work with the Mac Mini. My other option available at the store was to get a keyboard made by Apple and I don’t really like their keyboard. I am used to this style so it worked perfectly.

The first thing you will notice is the keyboard is cut in half. This is to allow your hands to rest more comfortably. It really isn't designed for the person that occasionally uses the keyboard, it is for the people that use a keyboard for 8 hours or so. I'm not on the keyboard enough to start feeling pain but it is a nice feature and seems to make typing easier for me. But if you are a gamer and you are used to a straight keyboard, then I suggest you stick with that. When I first had an ergonomic keyboard I noticed that I had to relearn where the keys were. Even after months of playing I would still find myself hitting the wrong key when I was in the heat of battle. Also the straight keyboard is more compact and easier to move back and forth along the keys.
This has a USB connector that can plug into a Mac or a PC. It also has several hot keys on the top that work with my Mac. This keyboard is corded, not cordless.
The 1-touch buttons.
These buttons are designed for the PC not the Mac which I now have. They are
- Favorites 1-5
- Volume +/-
All of the buttons work with my Mac except for the “search” key. Also, I have not loaded any software to make it work. These keys work automatically with the current Mac OS I have.
There are also two buttons on the bottom labeled back and forward. They move the cursor around and also skip songs in the Itunes player. These move things side to side and a toggle that is between each keyboard half toggle things up and down. This toggle is like an analog joystick, but just up and down.
You have all of the same buttons as a regular PC keyboard plus 4 buttons over the key pad. They are =, (. ), and a delete key. These of course are duplicate meant for the person that uses the key pad a lot.
The ergonomic features
It has two halves that makes it easier to use. This creates a comfortable angle for the hands to work in. The second is the keyboard is raised slightly. The angle allows your hands to rest more easily and to be angled in a better vertical angle. I like the split keyboard but I can do without that. What I refuse to do without is the palm rest, this really does make typing easier.
Is the key clicking sound too loud?
I read this as a complaint and I do not find it to be too loud. Yes it does make noise so I wouldn’t be using it if my wife was asleep in the same room (which has never come up) but not enough to bother someone watching the television in the same room or listening to music. I've used loud keyboards before and this is no where near as loud as those.
Who is this for?
Anyone using a Mac that prefers the PC keyboard over the mac. Any PC owner would be happy with this board.
The changes with hot keys.
I use the control key a lot to copy, and paste. Well with the mac the control key is actually the alt key. So that will take a little getting used to for those of us that copy and paste a lot.
You can use a damp cloth or use a can of air. Just be careful because you can easily destroy it with water. Putting it in the dishwasher is a very bad idea.
I've only had this for a little under a year and so far I've had no problems with it. I've owned several Microsoft keyboard and I have not had a durability issue with any of them. I bought a wireless years ago and soon after was gifted a better wireless keyboard from Epinions. I sold the older one and have been using the second Microsoft wireless since. That board has not given me any durability issues. The only issue I had was with the wireless mouse and I replaced that with a USB wired mouse that also works with my Mac.
I'm at a loss of anything else to say. I have no problems with it instantly putting the text on the screen. The keyboard is easy to hit and I don't have problems with getting a double letter on accident or not inputing a keystroke. It's a good little keyboard. The only real complaint is the price. It is not a cheap keyboard, but I guess you get what you pay for.
