menicer's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2
I popped in thps3 expecting a great game. And what I got was just that, a great game. And there in lies the problem. You see, THPS1 was ground breaking and extraordinary, thps2 was one of the best games ever, without a doubt. However, when one comes to thps3, there is not much to say along those lines. Sure the graphics have improved a helluva lot, and although the soundtrack has a lot of rap songs that I don't like, I can filter them out and listen to great bands like The Ramones, CKY, and Alien Ant Farm. And of course, there is the appearance of you friendly, neighborhood jackass Bam Margera to spice things up a bit. But all in all this title just seems a bit sub-par to the paradigm of excellence that was set forth by thps1 and 2. To thps3's credit though, I must say I enjoyed the array of new tricks that seem to stem directly out of a Rodney Mullen skate video. However this is a review, and therefore I must comment negatively a little as this game is not perfect. For starters, there is no school level. I mean, give me a break, the school2 was the best ever. I played that thing for hours and hours with friends. All in all, the levels just feel like Neversoft just tried to fit way to much stuff into things. I mean, Who needs like 4 half-pipes in a level? Also, the create a park feels like a downgraded version of thps2's park creator. Although there are a couple more parts and more area, they took away some features which leaves me thinking they've "left room for improvement" in thps4. The create a skater is the same way, not as much as the create a park, but their were still some things that you couldn't do. I must also mention the difficulty of this game. Maybe it's because I'm a seasoned thps fan, but I just felt like this game was way to easy. However, there were times that I was glad of this as you have to beat the game 22 times to unlock everything. The new advancement system needs some work. What was wrong with the money in thps2? I liked that. Plus, with this system, it doesn't matter if you %100 every level or not, there's no real incentive. Not to mention the fact that you don't get any unlockables for doing all the gaps. That was part of the magic of thps2 and they took it out. Well I will say that the unlockables were over all pretty cool. I was quite a bit upset by the "Expert mode" cheat though. In thps2 there was an unlockable called "Simulation mode" that I was very cool and made playing the school2 more challenging and a lot more fun. I thought that "Simulation mode" would be like that. Not true. In "Simulation mode" you can't do a varialflip unless you jup off a ramp. Even if your stats are maxed out. Now I'm not pro skater, But I have skated for a while and I can do a varialflip. But the real problem lies in the fact that you cant varialflip but you can do a 900 with some ease. No that seems a bit silly if you ask me. Maybe I'm being a bit too hard on the game though. I love this game and would recommend it to anyone. I guess this game just didn't live up to my high expectations. Oh well, I guess I'll just wait for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4!
