combat_rock's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2
Well, if you are just joining us here in Hawk world, then you just simply do not know what you are missing. The Tony Hawk games were amongst the best available on the PS1, N64, and Sega Dreamcast. And now the series has taken the next step in a bid for total console domination, appearing not only on the PS2, but also on the Gamecube and Xbox.
The gameplay is once again right on target. Each of the four primary buttons (on the PS2 pad) does a different type of trick, except for the X button, which is used to accelerate and ollie (read: jump). For example, the circle button does grab tricks, the square button does flip tricks, and the triangle grinds. Combining each of these buttons with a different direction on the D-pad does a different form of the designated trick type. You can also perform special tricks by entering different combos of directions followed by the appropriate trick button.
Sounds simple right? Well, the now standard trick linking system allows you to create and customize any combo you want, so long as you can pull it off. The manual maneuver allows you to link two grinds even if the ledges are not right beside each other, and with the new revert; you can throw vert tricks and lip plants into the mix. This combination of simple rules and infinite options makes for some of the most engaging game play ever.
But that's not all. You also get the chance to play as Tony himself along with a nice selection of other top skaters in levels that range from realistic to extreme. Gone is the money system from THPS2, it has been replaced by a much more agreeable system of objectives that thrill and entertain (getting the Canadian's tounge unstuck from the frozen pole comes to mind).
All of this comes with a nice set of options, including an in-depth park creator, and a decent skater creator. The soundtrack rocks with tracks by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ramones, and Xzibit to name a few, and the massive amounts of secret characters, levels, and cheats will keep you playing until you've unlocked it all.
Also included are several nice multiplayer games, including my favorite, tag. This, along with the simple controls, makes it one of the better party games out there. And that's kind of rare, given that it's an excellent one-player game as well. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who considers themselves a fan of fun games at all. You'll be happy you did.
