brunett23mj's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2
There are four Tony Hawk games: Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. Tony Hawk is an excellent game. If you haven't played any of them then you have no idea what you are missing. Tony Hawk works also on Dreamcast, Gameboy, PS1, and PS2.
Characters
Tony Hawk 3 has 12 real life skaters including Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Elissa Steamer, Chad Muska, Kareem Cambell and Bam Margera. As you might already know, Bam is in the MTV show Jackass. There are also hidden characters like: the cop Officer Dick, some bum, a pro surfer, a demoness and Wolverine (yes, from X-Men) and Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode 1. Every skater has different stats and specials. Some may be great at grinding rails...but have bad air. There are hidden "stat points" throughout the different parks. When you collect them you can use them to make your character better at any of the options listed you want to. There are 5 stat points on every level.
Levels
Tony Hawk 3s levels are much more detailed and larger than the games before it. There are people walking around and cars driving in the streets. You should avoid running into a bully, lava, water, pits, or cars. There is even an earthquake in one level. Each level has different challenges. Some challenges are to get a high score, get a medal, smash pumpkins, and MORE! Some of them are hard and some of them are very simple.
When you are playing 2 player there are a variety of different play styles including Graffiti, Trick Attack, Horse and King of the Hill.
Modes
Career Mode: This is the main game part of the game. You may choose a skater or create your own in the Create-a-Skater option. When you first play you will have only one level, the Foundry. It is very good for grinding. It is also small and somewhat boring, but after beating a few challenges you can go to a new level called Canada. You can pick up decks and tricks. You can also find lots of stat points.
Single Session: You choose a skater and level. You still won't have all of the levels yet. You have to unlock them in career mode.
Free Skate: Free Skate is like Single Session, but you have no timer running so you can skate and skate as long as you want. It is great for practicing tricks.
Network Play: You can play it via on the internet. I haven't tried it yet. It seems to be pretty neat though.
Skate Park Creator: Here you can design your own park! This is really fun...especially when you are stuck in a level and are bored of it (always happens to me). You can make some awesome parks if you are creative.
Sounds
The sounds are great. There is music that you can choose to use. They have a variety of songs, my favorite being Paparazzi by Xzibit (because it is the music from the Sopranos). They have songs from different people. Most of it is rock music. You can turn off songs that you don't like.
Graphics
Graphics are great! There is not 1 sloppy texture. Everything looks natural, sharp, and somewhat rounded. It is more detailed than previous games.
Control
Control is GREAT!!!! Anyone can learn it. There are so many trick combinations you can learn. The possibilities are honestly endless!
