Pros:Windows XP with PROS?! Okay, so it's compatible with everything...
Cons:Pokey after some time, Virus Prone, unstable...
The Bottom Line: This is not the OS for new users... It's something that only users of 95 should even try... Go for MAC.
The Era of Windows XP came around the time Windows 2000 was just catching on... I myself had been a Windows ME user (Ugh) for nearly a year by the time XP came out. Being myself, I skeptically took Windows XP as what most Microsoft products were -- bad. However, after realizing the imense number of errors that Windows ME loved to give perfectly good systems, I figured it was a good idea to upgrade to this new, XPerienced, operating system. Boy was I wrong...
At the time of purchase, I had no idea about all this Windows counterjunk... So we took our PC to our local "shop". The man behind the counter gave us a nice smile, told us that Windows XP would be easy to install as long as we have no files we want to back up (No).
We leave, happy that we are getting a newer, more updated OS.
However, danger struck immediately afterward. We got the PC back, and while I shouldn't be blaming this on Windows, I must say that I was quite dissapointed. The jerk at the store installed XP just fine... however, he failed to tell us that our 64MB of RAM would not even suffice for working in such an enviroment.
So I trudge on with the 64MB of RAM. I figure I can wait long enough for a good reason to get more RAM.
And that day came when I upgraded to Verizon Online DSL.
I upgraded to 192MB of RAM... Not a bad upgrade either, I had actually began to enjoy using my computer and high speed internet connection with it's 192MB of PC133.
Soon though, Windows became truly evil. It's OS was unstable, slowing my PC down to a crawl and allowing itself to be bogged down despite my attempts of minor upgrades.
I downloaded the BETA of Windows SP2.
I loved this new upgrade to Windows XP. The Beta worked flawlessly, and it seemed to actually make my computer run faster. I had again enjoyed using a Windows product.
That is, until I got a new computer...
First of all, Windows should not allow Dell, Gateway, Compaq, Emachines and the like to create their own variation of the XP OS. The version I got with my PC was an ugly, Emachines modified corporate take-over. I quickly found a copy of Windows XP PRo and installed that.
I then wanted to try the new, full version of SP2. I was so stupid to try that...
Me, being the Anti-Corporate giant I am... Downloaded the full IT version of SP2. It worked on my other machine, why not now?
Apparently, Microsof's SP2 does not work too well with the Intel Celeron - D processor. Installing SP2 throws you into an infinite loop of reboots.
After formatting and installing the patch from Microsoft (Which is VERY hard to find), I finally got SP2 up and running.
Now installation of both Windows SP1 and 2 are annoying. Not only do you have to activate your software, but it continually allows Windows Messenger to take over the PC, and it will annoyingly repeat itself "Take a tour of Windows xP" -- With SP2, the Security Center never leaves you alone. Microsoft seems pretty adamant about making sure we download it's updates... (Why should we need updates for an update?!)
All in all, I now hate -- despise -- want Windows to burn --... Pardon, much unexpressed rage against this unstable OS.
This is not the OS for new users. If you want a PC, go for the cheap Mac Mini.
This is not the OS for old users. If you want a new PC, for for the cheap Mac Mini... Ditch Windows.
