jesterrace's Full Review: Microsoft Memory Unit for Xbox
Even though the idea of a memory card might seem like a worthless proposition to most XBOX users it does have a few uses. Most never bother with it since the 8GB HD(or 10GB depending on which version of the XBOX console you have) is more than sufficient to handle all the game saves you could want and then some. So why on earth would anyone spend $25-$30 on a Memory Card that only has a capacity of 8MB (500 blocks)?
People do so for the following reasons:
1. To go visit a buddy’s house to show them your progress in a game or for a multiplayer game save. Much less cumbersome than lugging your XBOX around with you. This is probably the biggest reason why people purchase the memory card.
2. Backup. As with a computer, XBOX HDs are prone to failure and if you have a vital game save that you want to protect at all costs, then this provides an option for you.
3. For the modding scene, the memory card is an essential component to the softmod process.
Unfortunately the brilliant folks at MS didn't exactly think things through when they designed the capacity of the thing as a number of popular games (i.e. Halo, Halo 2) can either max out or exceed the capacity of the memory card WITH A SINGLE GAME SAVE!!!!!!! So it almost like playing Russian roulette with anything but the 3rd option listed above, since the game save for the game that you want to save on the memory card might exceed it's capacity or fill it up so you can't save anything else on it. The Memory Card really should have been designed with a 100MB capacity in order to really be a viable option for game save storage.
I will be honest and say that I purchased my memory card for the last of the 3 options that I listed above. For that purpose it works great, but I have absolutely no more room on my memory card for anything else.
The bottom line is that the memory card simply isn't practical for most people due to the fact that the XBOX already comes with an HD and the capacity of the Memory Card severely limits it's options.
