Pros: Low price
Cons: Would not install with Windows XP, website down; no tech support
The Bottom Line: This is not a plug and play device for Windows XP. Unless you are a computer expert, the low price is not worth the frustration.

| cartan's Full Review: Microtek ScanMaker 4800 Flatbed Scanner |
I have never had such a frustrating experience trying to install software for an accessory as with the Microtek 4800 scanner. The website was no help; when it was up, the links to further information didn't work. Most of the time it was down. The website instructions for forcing Windows XP to accept the installation were grammatically and technically incorrect. ("Close all Windows programs. End Tasking on all but TWO programs; the two programs that you DO NOT end tasking are EXPLORER." What the heck does that mean? Isn't EXPLORER one program? Do they mean Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer? There are NO programs running because the first instruction said to close all Windows programs.) The computer did not respond the way the instructions said it would. After several days of hair-pulling and fist-pounding experiences, the computer would not recognize the scanner. I de-installed all the software, repackaged and returned the scanner.
