bombadil's Full Review: Midland GXT500 (14 Channels) Two Way Radio
I'm a long term user of 2-way radios. I primarily use them out in the hills, woods and fields of the Cannon River Valley. I've primarily owned Motorola in the past. The Motorola's are tough, well designed and fairly compact. Their problem is range. They really don't go as far as you'd expect.
I will certainly say that as far as distance is concerned there is nothing better than these GXT500's. The 5-watts put out by this Midland GXT500 seems to make a difference. I can talk further than ever before using these radios.
Of course there are drawbacks. I own 6 of these radios and have a feel for their shortcomings. The "call" button is so easily bumped you're always sending out false "calls" when you use the belt-clip. The worst problem occurs when the battery gets critically low. For some reason the electronics go retarded and enable the vibrating motor feature. So, you have a dead radio in your back-pack and for no reason it starts to vibrate even though the unit is powered off. You need to pull the batteries to stop it! This happens on more than one of the GXT500 radios I have.
