theman61890's Full Review: Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition for PSP
Personally I have not bought a racing game since Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64, but when I saw this game at Gamecrazy for twelve dollars I bought it since I remember Gamefaqs.com gave its a perfect score. Usually I find that all typical racing games are repetitive since you typically do the same thing in every game, you race. The only racing games I buy are the ones you can destroy your enemy with bazookas, lighting and turtle shells such as Crash Racing, Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing. I must say however that this game surpassed my expectations with ease and that Rockstar made a great game.
Story
The story is the typical racing game storyline. You go on different mission and race in different areas and try to become the head honcho of that area. You race and earn money and stature as you buy power ups and advances to develop your car into a street racing machine. This game has a wide array of missions and places to race in with a variety of types of track designs.
Gameplay
The gameplay is simply amazing. The best part of Midnight Club 3 is the car building and making. This game literally hundreds of different ways to enhance your are, by far the most I have ever seen in any racing game. In the game you can do anything to your car. You have the options to color, add decals, add hydraulics, and anything else you can think of.
After making a race car you can choose to race in three different cities. this not sound like alot but each city has an obscene amount of races. There are different types of events you an take part in, you can be in a car tournament, challenge street racers, be challenged by street races and etc. All the races take part in the cities, with the exception of the timed challenges. These races take place in a enclosed area.
The controls are definitely simplistic with the option to customize if need be. The control system is the typical racing game engine. You have a button to use nitrous, brake and accelerate. Essentially this s a one button game since you will typically only accelerate since there is really no time to brake since your opponents are usually at your level.
The only thing bad about the gameplay is the loading time. Sometimes the game takes several minutes to load one level. This is comm though for many of the current generation games, so this will be really bearable for most.
Graphics
This game is really hard to judge graphically. The scenery is something that is obsolete since you wont park your car in this game just to admire the scenery. The scenery is really a blur considering that this game is built for speed. The only graphics you really see are the cars, and trust me they are stunning. Every car in the game has its own flavor so you never see the same car twice. All cars have trademark designs and works of art on them which make the more appealing. The cars are simply enriched with detail.
The cities are very well layed out. Besides the streets, you could race through many other places. Sometimes you can roll through the park, an alley and even a mall. Even though you cant really take a full look at the scenery since its blows by so fast the areas look great. I also love the color scheme of the levels. There are a wide array of colors in the worlds and landscapes, something lost for most racing games. The only other game to have such luscious backgrounds was probably Cruisin exotica which by far had the greatest level design for any racing games.
Sound
The sounds of the game is great. Firs you have the typical car sound such as the brakes screeching, the engine rumbling and the pavement scratching as you blaze the track. I also love how the tires screech as you do a race saving drift into the finish line as you leap your opponent in the final turn, really great stuff.
Along with the car sound the soundtrack is superb. The game has a nice mix of rock, hip hop, r&b and reggae songs. Each song fits well with the racing genre. It does not matter if you hate hip hop or love rock you will definitely like atleast 90 percent of the songs in this game if not all of them.
Replayability
This game will take you an eternity to beat. This game has millions of cars to customize and hundreds of parts to obtain. This game literally has hundreds of street races to race in and with a wide array of racing areas you will never get bored of this game.
Overall this is a must buy for a PSP owner. You can find this tiles for about 15 dollars at a local game store and it is easily worth that price. The game will have you playing for months as you try to harbor the greatest collection of cars imaginable as you try to become the number one street racer in the world.
