vggolfer's Full Review: NFL Blitz 2002 for GameCube
I too am a blitz fan, but I didn’t know it would be worth it to fork up $50.00 to get 2002. Thank god I did!
Modes
There are 4 different modes in this game. They are: Quickplay, Exhibition, Season, and Tournament. Quickplay is just a quick pick of teams and you’re on the field getting smashed (1-4 players). Exhibition is the place where you and 3 other of your friends can enter names & pin numbers and keep track of all your stats, and take on all 31 teams (1-4 players).
Season mode is where you pick a team and take him through a full NFL season, as you battle your way to the super bowl (1 player). Tournament mode is a game mode for you and your friends. You can play a tournament with 4 or 8 players and see who is the champion on them all (1-4 players).
There are also other things like Options and Blitz Theater. Well you know what Options is, a place where you can customize your game play. Blitz Theater is where you can view different movies like: the Opening FMV and other ones when you earn them (When you beat the Season you get one same for Exhibition). Also before any game starts there is a code screen where you can enter codes.
Graphics & Sounds
The graphics are amazing for a Blitz game. The players are crisp, and look realistic, and the stadiums are beautiful too. The sound effects are great! You can here the thud and crunch when you drill some one to the ground. You wouldn’t think so since it’s a Blitz game but there are commentators. They say some funny stuff like: “Man that had to hurt, reminds me of my playing days. Oh ya Bill those benches were brutle.” Also it is pretty cool when the players do a victory dance after they make a touchdown.
In-game Stuff
There are many different special moves you can do, like: turbo, juke, spin, stiff-arm, hurdle, and dive. To make a first down it is 30 yards. Since it’s Midway after passing it to the same receiver 3 times in a row, and sacking the QB 2 times in a row you get on fire. Which makes you stronger, faster, and just plain better. The only way to get off fire is the following: If you are on fire on defense you can get off fire if they get a first down, score, or kick a field goal. If you are on offence you will cool down if you get sacked, the other team gets and interception, if the other team recovers a fumble, if you don’t get a first down or if the 2 point conversion or field goal aren’t good.
There is also an 8th player called the impact player. Which is a player that you can tell what to do. On offense he can Protect the QB, Dish Off, Get Open, Go Deep, and Block L&R. On defense he can Cover, Blitz, Delay Rush, and Zone L&R.
Plays
There are almost 100 plays to choose from on offence. They have you “old school” plays such as Da Bomb, Monkey, and Sub-Zero. They have 4 other categories with 18 in each. Also each team has there own 9 plays that are the team plays.
Overall
This is one of the best games you can get for gamecube. Most people think of Blitz to be crappy graphics, but these are not crappy. If you buy it you will be happy…very happy
