Let me start by saying I am NOT a hockey fan by any means ... I actually started by renting the game so that I would have a two player game to play when friends came over ... Since then I have bought my own copy (I was hunting the game down at blockbusters in a 20 mile radius) ... The game is EXTREMELY fun to play ... the games are fast paced and action packed ... it is 15 minutes of hitting, fighting, and scoring ... The quick pace makes it a better play then football or baseball ... there is no wait time while the other picks the moves or pitches to throw ... the graphics are of good quality and it dolby digital sound which also is nice ... you can create your own team & completely customize the players ... including body weight, head size, etc. ... you can then use that team to compete for the Midway cup ... and each game you win allows you to increase the attributes of your players ... soon the players you created become better than the players preloaded ... you can also play in a mode that allows you win money that can buy new rinks (most of which are hard to play on), teams, jerseys, and heads (which allow you to perform fun finishing moves in fights) ... the game also is loaded with codes that allow you to play in all kinds of elements, show the speed of shots, increase the size of the puck, etc. ... it adds an element of fun to the game ...
there are only a few drawbacks that i have with the game ... 1.) the fighting is arbitrary ... 2.) you cannot change the period length ... 3.) it seems that all of the NHL players are very similar in abilities
Overall the game play more than makes up for these drawbacks and is definitely worth picking up!
