| skhong's Full Review: Miele Novotronic G841 U Plus 24 in. Built-in Dishw... |
We originally bought the new Maytag MDB8600A 3 rack dishwasher because it was a bit less expensive than the Miele Novotronic 841 SC. We were not impressed, and the Maytag ended up going back to the store (with a restocking fee), and we bought the Miele. What a difference. There is not even any comparison. This machine is in a different league.
What's better? Everything. Follow with me.
1. The machine is heavy. If you ship and install it yourself (as I did) be prepared to have a friend help get it into the house. It weighs about twice as much as the Maytag. But, the quality shows.
2. Stainless Steel interior is just what you need inside the machine. Besides looking great, they say that it condenses moisture to help dry the dishes. It works. Our tupperware never dried in the Maytag (or any other machine that we've used for that matter), but they dry in the Miele. The Miele doesn't even have an exhaust to let the moisture out.
3. Three Racks, the SC model has 3 racks, two for plates and glasses, and one slim rack for the silverware. We can get so much stuff in this dishwasher because there is no silverware basket to get in the way. And the silverware rack only takes up about 2 inches of the overall space inside. It also holds each piece of silverware separately, so that they don't touch. By doing so, it allows the silverware to get cleaner, and prevents tarnishing.
4. This machine is Really Quiet. When it is running, you really don't notice it. Just a slight sound of water inside. The loudest part is the drain cycle, and that is probably due to the fact that I hooked up the drain hose to the disposer. I took a Sound Level Meter out to measure how loud the dishwasher is during the wash cycle. When I put the decibel meter right up to the dishwasher (within 1 inch) I got a reading of 56db at the loudest spot I could find. Normal conversation level is about 65-70db. You really don't need to speak up at all when this machine is running.
5. Installation was a snap. If you have a professional install the machine, Miele will double the warranty from the standard 1 year to 2 years. Since I installed it myself, I didn't get that extra warranty, but it was so simple. Miele has thoughtfully included an attached water supply hose, as well as a prewired plug, that plugs into a standard outlet. The water supply hose is a standard garden hose thread and comes with the 3/8" compression fitting adapter. I used the adapter.
Miele allows you to adjust all 4 leveling legs without moving the machine. The back leveling legs have these shafts that run to the front toekick panel to allow you to change the back height with a screwdriver. Easy.
6. This dishwasher seems to get everything clean. And in the end, that's what it is really about.
7. Capacity. This machine holds A LOT. As in A LOT more than the newest Maytag. I currently have 35 plates, 16 bowls, 23 glasses / cups, 60 pieces of silverware in the machine, and it's not full. I could get maybe 4 more plates, 3 more little bowls, 2 more regular bowls, 2 more glasses or cups, and some more miscellaneous silverware in the machine. They claim it will hold 14 place settings. I don't doubt it, as I have more in it right now. The Maytag claims 10 placesettings.
8. They also claim that this machine is environmentally friendly. It uses less water than competing machines. The Miele uses at most 6.3 gallons of water versus 10 gallons for most American dishwashers, including the Maytag. If you do 3 loads a week, you'll save over 500 gallons of water. It also uses less detergent to get the dishes clean. They specify about 2 tablespoons per load (versus 3 tablespoons for the Maytag).
9. The Flow Through water heater is better than the normal heating element. With the normal heating element at the bottom of the washtub, if a plastic something falls on it, the plastic can melt and burn, and perhaps wreck the heating element. The Miele has the heating element in the tube that the water flows through, underneath the machine.
10. This machine is updatable. A service technician can download new software into the machine to take advantage of new programs, or new research, or new optimizations, or whatever Miele develops in the future. Cool.
11. How many dishwashers do you know of that have a built-in water softener? This one does. That way, if you have hard water, and you don't have a softener, the Miele can get the dishes clean. You need to put dishwasher salt in the compartment at the bottom for this to work.
CONCLUSION
I would not hesitate to recommend this dishwasher to anyone. Miele has taken the time to understand what it takes to make a great product, not just to make a great profit. And the quality shows.
Everything about this machine is just so much better than the Maytag MDB8600A. I don't have a doubt that this machine will outlast the Maytag as well.
