I bought this item, The Mighty Bright Xtra Flex Duet Stand Light about a week and a half ago on Ebay for $18.31.
Stand lights fasten to a music stand and illuminate music when it is otherwise too dark to see. Before, I have had sufficient light in all my performances, which are generally during the day or in venues that have plenty of light. However, I did the first in a series of two Jazz Vespers services at a local church and the light was a bit dim where I was set up, even though it was during daylight (evening) hours. Its probably because many churches are designed so that the sun comes through during morning hours, making them a little dimmer at night then they would otherwise be.
Anyhow, I was looking for the following features:
- reasonable price
- battery-operated (the fewer cords, the better, especially when I do not need to be amplified)
- bright enough to illuminate the music
- Flexible enough to easily position the light head(s)
- Able to deal with two pages of music
I noticed this unit right away. It was light and had LEDs, which are billed to last extremely long and do not require replacement. The descriptions made it look like it was what I needed.
Once I received it, I checked it out. It folded nicely in a small box for portability. The light was more than enough for a music stand, although it was not enough to take the place of my failed desk lamp on my computer table. It took 3 AAA batteries. Each of the LED heads has an on-off switch.
I also used it a little before I expected to. There was a power outage on Wednesday night for no apparent reason. I had students coming. During the evening, my studio gets a bit dim if I am relying only on outside light. So, I put this on the stand and it worked great under those conditions until ComEd, a TERRIBLE power company, got the power back on, about halfway into a one hour lesson.
I clipped it to the middle of the top of the stand and it was secure there. The flexible goosenecks holding the LEDs were easily positioned to have them illuminate the music. They were also easily adjusted when I was switching the music on the stand. The light was more than adequate in a dim setting.
I can recommend this unit as cost effective, functional and VERY portable. They claim battery use is light. Personally, I carry two sets of new spare batteries for everything I am going to use in a particular performance.
I think this light would work very well under low light conditions. If playing in very dark conditions, there is a brighter model available for around $30 plus shipping.
