Pros: Fun for the whole family! Compact
Cons: A little on the spendy side
I know that Catch Phrase is a popular game for many people. Most of my friends own it. It is a popular group game that can be played with 4-20 people if you want. My family was excited to receive the electronic version of this game as a gift for Christmas last year.
The rules of the game are pretty simple to understand. There are two teams. Everyone sits in a circle around the room. The teams are determined by every other person. Every other person is on the same team, so you will not be sitting next to a teammate. That way, each team gets a turn.
The first person will start out with the game in hand. On it are two buttons. One determines the category. Some of these include Sports, Around the House, and History. The person pushes the start button. It starts to beep, and a word comes up. If Sports is the category, the word baseball might come up. Without saying the word itself, the person has to explain what it is to his teammates using descriptive words, such as strike! He can sing "Take me out to the....." As long as he doesn't say baseball, he's ok. When the team guesses the word, he pushes the button to change the word, and he passes it to the next person. The next person will be on the opposite team. They will get a new word, and they too will try to explain to their team what the word is. It continues around in this fashion.
All the while, there is a beeper going. It continues to grow faster as time is running out. After a certain amount of time, the timer will go off, and the person holding it is out of luck. The other team receives a point. Play continues until one team reaches the end. You can play to as many points as you want, or follow the game instructions. Whatever you want.
We love this game. We play it at parties or just for fun. It's easy to grab when you want to play. There are no small pieces to be lost. Before the electronic version came out, you had to worry about losing the cards, and replacing them when you were finished with one. This way, the words are automatically scrambled for you. It is lots of fun!
