| RCarte2000's Full Review: Milton Bradley Silly 6 Pins Electronic Talking Bow... |
The Big Surprise
All last year, my daughter saw commercials for Silly 6 Pins. She would "ooooh" and "aaaaah" everytime she saw it on television. I wasn't sure if she would really like it or if it was just one of those "ask for everything she sees" type of toys. This year, she got the game.
Allison unwrapped a nice present from her grandparents and there before her eyes was a nice, colorful box stating "Silly 6 Pins" quite boldly. The expression on her face was priceless and then she screams "Mommy! It's Silly 6 Pins and I'm going to learn to bowl now!"
Contents
When we opened the box, we found six very brightly colored plastic bowling pins and one bright blue bowling ball, also constructed of plastic. There was also a tray/ramp with a speaker, a battery compartment (taking 3 AA batteries, not included) and indentions with colored buttons on the tray to set up the pins. Once the batteries were inserted, the fun began.
As you sit each pin upon the indention, the pin begins to talk. It's amusing to listen to them as you look at them because each pin has a funny face on it. Between the comical and sarcastic comments and the funny faces, the game is just too cute. My daughter giggled from start to finish.
The pins have names. If you look through the instruction manual you can compare the colors and faces of pins to that shown in the manual and figure out what their names are. There are names such as "Silly Sally, Silly Stevie, and Silly Stu." I can't express just how adorable this game is.
The ball is lightweight and easy to roll at the pins, or in the case of my own child, throw at the pins. The pins are easy to knock down. They are taunting targets as they talk the talk and even wobble back and forth to entice the players to knock them down. When they are knocked down, they know it and they react to it. They also announce the score after each frame.
The game is one of the Milton-Bradley/Hasbro Preschool series for children ages 3-7. I have heard of children under three using the game and truly enjoying it, so it can be used for those under three, but the manufacturer has their own "legal" reasons for recommending three and up. (As with most toys and their age ratings.) The instructions are written in both English and Spanish.
There is an on/off switch on the base, but there is no volume control and that can make it difficult, as these little crazies tend to be a bit noisy. In addition, the pins and ball are plastic, as stated earlier, and when they fall on hard floors (un-carpeted ones) they do make quite a bit of racket. Living in an apartment with my landlord on the floor below me, this is a concern.
Pros
Despite the constant abuse of being knocked down constantly and being beaten on the floor, these pins are sturdy. Despite hitting the pins and being bounced off of floors and walls, the ball is also quite sturdy. The base was even dropped a couple of times and the result was flawless.
My daughter adores this game. She laughs and giggles as she plays and it keeps her attention well. She could stand and play this (or kneel/sit and roll the ball) over and over again for hours. It's with great pride that she announced to me, "Mom! I Can Bowl Now!"
Cons
Perhaps the biggest downfall of the game is that once kids play it and believe they are great and can do anything, they begin to ask to go to the real bowling alley and do it! I think we'll wait a bit for that adventure. In the meantime, Allison will giggle and play with these looney creations awaiting their next cycle of abuse from a hyperactive or excited preschooler.
