| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Milwaukee's Best |
When I decided to rate Milwaukee's Best, I found myself reminiscing to my days as a college student. Beer was a regular part of life back then and, more often than not, the beer of choice was Milwaukee's Best. And for one undeniable reason: P-R-I-C-E.
Since I had a large car, I was usually elected to go and buy the kegs of beer for the weekly keg parties. I would always ask everyone what beer they wanted me to buy, hoping that they would say "Michelob", or "Budweiser", or "Miller High Life", or anything else. But the consensus was always the same: "Buy Milwaukee's Best. We know its awful, but we can get a lot for the money and, besides, we are giving most of it away, so what's the point in spending a lot of money on something good?". They did have a good point. At that time (the late 1980's), I could purchase a half- barrel (approx. 15 gallons) of Milwaukee's Best for only $19.50! Throw in the sales tax, and the total price per keg was only $20.63!
This is the primary reason for the success of Milwaukee's Best. It has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, price tags of any malt beverage. I don't know of many other beers that retail for only $1.99 per six pack. And if you want an even cheaper price per ounce, Milwaukee's Best sells in my area for only 99 cents for a 40 oz. bottle! That's only about 2.5 cents per ounce! It's the cheapest buzz money can buy.
As far as the taste goes, Milwaukee's Best has a grainy flavor, with no hop character at all. The aroma reminds me of grain and cardboard. The foam is light and it settles down very quickly. The taste is balanced, if served ice- cold, but a little sweet, if it is served warmer. I recommend serving this very cold. The colder you serve a beer, the less you will notice the taste characteristics. If Milwaukee's Best is allowed to warm up past 50 degrees, it is undrinkable. Just the smell alone, at this temperature, will cause an uncontrollable grimace, similar to what you see in the Keystone beer ads. It deteriorates very quickly when it is warmed, which is yet another sign of a poorly made product. This beer has 128 calories per 12 oz serving, which is a little lower than most other regular- strength beers.
Although Milwaukee's Best is a bad product, it does have it's place. It is a beer brewed to appeal to the college market and to others who simply want as much beer as possible for a small amount of money. With a price this low, it will undoubtedly continue to be a popular product. But if you are a member of the lower middle class or higher, you should respect your body enough to reject Milwaukee's Best. Virtually anything in the beer isle is superior to the "Beast".
