Mineral Ice for Sore Muscles

Pros:Penetrates fast, relieves sore muscles, not greasy
Cons:Strong menthol odor
The Bottom Line: Mineral Ice is a nice product to have in the medicine cabinet. It helps provide relief of sore muscles and joints.
The first time I was introduced to Mineral Ice was several years ago, when I was in my chiropractor's office dealing with muscle spasms. The Dr. used several different methods, including Mineral Ice, heat packs, and a rolling massager. I also spent several months with the massage therapist before all was said and done.

What Is Mineral Ice?
The container states that Mineral Ice provides temporary relief of the minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with:
* Simple backache strains
* Sports related injuries
Mineral Ice comes in a 8 ounce plastic jar, with a picture of snow capped mountains on the label. The product is a light blue colored gel, of medium consistency. One sniff and you immediately smell the menthol, and the scent reminds me of most other pain relieving gels and creams (such as BenGay).
Active Ingredients: Menthol (2%)
Inactive Ingredients: Ammonium Hydroxide, Carbomer 934, Cupric Sulfate, FD&C Blue 1, Isopropyl Alcohol, Magnesium Sulfate, Sodium Hydroxide, Thymol, Water.
Directions (from the manufacturer)
Adults and children 2 years of age and older: Clean skin of all other ointments, creams, sprays, or liniments. Apply to affected areas not more often than 3 to 4 times daily. May be used with wet or dry bandages or with ice packs. No protective cover needed. Children under 2 years of age: consult a doctor. Use only as directed. Read all warnings before use. Store in a cool place. Keep lid tightly closed.
Since this gives a burning sensation, you are obviously directed to keep it away from your eyes. I always wash my hands well after applying, in case I need to rub my eyes. You are also directed not to apply this product to any damaged or irritated skin, or to any open wounds.
Once the Mineral Ice is applied, you should not tightly bandage the area.
My Personal Experience
Mineral Ice has a consistency unlike any similar products on the market. The gel is not greasy, and it absorbs into the skin very quickly, giving me fast acting pain relief.
The gel reminds me of one my highschool coach used on my leg for a pulled muscle, (Icy Hot). While the gel goes on feeling icy cold, it quickly heats up to make my sore muscles feel relaxed and more comfortable.
As stated in the directions, Mineral Ice can be used with ice packs, as the ice actually helps to reduce inflammation in the muscles. I like the feel of heat much more than I do ice, but I have found I can't use Mineral Ice and a heating pad together. The heat level directly on my skin gets too uncomfortable, and probably does me more harm than good.
Although the directions say Mineral Ice can be used on bruises, I have never used it in this manner. I recently fell on the ice and bruised my finger - my entire ring finger turned purple. My Dr. said it would help to keep it elevated to prevent blood from pooling in the tip. They also said to apply ice. A friend of mine is a nurse, and she told me that after 24 hours I should soak my finger in warm water. It helps open up the blood vessels. I assume that Mineral Ice would work in a similar manner with bruising.
The only down side to using Mineral Ice is the menthol odor associated with it. It really does leave me smelling like a medicine cabinet, and the scent lingers for a few hours.
I have been very happy with the performance of Mineral Ice. I usually use it in conjunction with Advil or Tylenol, and it really does provide fast, soothing relief to sore muscles. I get the occasional leg aches at night when I am trying to sleep, and Mineral Ice also provides that much needed relief, long enough to allow me to get to sleep.
The fact that my Chiropractor also uses Mineral Ice on his patients makes me feel even better about using it. I give Mineral Ice two thumbs up.
Mineral Ice is available in most drugstores and supermarkets, and costs around $10.00 for the 8 ounce jar, which lasts a long time.
