| charlesp2001's Full Review: Konica Minolta DiMAGE Xi Digital Camera |
When I first laid eyes on a Minolta Dimage Xi camera I knew I had to have one. It's super tiny and takes fantastic photos. The LCD screen may be small compared to newer digital cameras but it still offers a great image allowing you to take better photos. The lens cover opens and closes automatically whenever you switch modes or turn the camera on and off. This is great because it allows you to take pictures on the fly without having to worry about bumbling around or forgetting to put the cover back on.
The built in flash is sufficient for all but the farthest objects and doesn't produce any glare. Red eye isn't a problem in most cases I've come across. The camera takes 3.2 Megapixel images and uses excellent JPEG compression allowing you 1,000 photos or more on a 256MB SD card. The camera can take 30 second videos with audio at 320X240 resolution in Quicktime's .MOV format. The image quality in the videos is excellent and the audio is surprisingly good.
The camera features a 3X optical zoom and 2X digital zoom for a total of 6X zoom. The onboard controls are easy to operate and the built-in menus offer a wide variety of options to perfect your images. You can easily changes languages, ISO settings, resolution and image quality, and more.
One thing that bothers me was the position of the lens, which is in the top left of the camera (when you're pointing at what you're going to take a photo of) and I frequently end up putting a finger or two in front of the camera when I take pictures. I've got a dozen or two pictures with a small speck of my finger in the top left of the photo which I end up having to crop out. If one is careful this isn't a problem at all, but it can take getting used to.
In closing, this is a fantastic camera. It's super small size and light weight allow you to literally take this camera anywhere. Minolta even offers a sealed case to allow the camera to be taken UNDER water! The battery life is great and allows for a couple hours of constant use.
