Miracle Beam: You Light Up My Life!
Written: Apr 30, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Sturdy construction, efficient, bright, inexpensive
Cons:Comes with cheap batteries, switch may cause problems
The Bottom Line: Makes nice gifts for anyone! (Including children!)
For the last couple of years, during the Christmas holiday shopping season, Home Depot has had bins of these Miracle Beam flashlights for sale for the grand total of $1 each! (Of course, this is along with a whole bunch of other Chinese made tools they pawn off to their customers as "gift ideas" at this time...). I bought a whole bunch of them! They are indeed great to have in the car, around the house, in my tool boxes, by the circuit breakers, in the childrens' rooms, with the camping gear - and a host of other places!
The flashlights are made with a sturdy aluminum shell. In place of the traditional bulb, this flashlight comes with nine LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). These LEDs work like a light bulb in the sense that when a small current is passed through them, they glow brightly. However, the LEDs are much more efficient, do not create much heat, last a long, long time, and are not as delicate. The light given off is rather blue-ish. It is a strong light that can easily shine over ten feet away.
The flashlight runs on three batteries, which came with the flashlights I bought. However, the batteries were super cheap Chinese batteries that I do not trust. I replaced them with good reliable Eveready batteries. So far, I have not had to replace the batteries in any of the flashlights for over a year of use on the flashlights, and they still shine brightly! Another cheaply made component is the switch that comes with these flashlights. Some work, some need a little convincing.
Beware! I also found similar flashlights for sale in my local dollar store. They look very much alike, but they only have three LEDs. I bought some of these too, and they seem to work fine, albeit, not as bright. As an experiment, I left a flashlight on continuosly with the Chinese batteries installed to see how long the light would stay on (with the three LED light). It lasted for well over a week before my son found the light and started to play with it (and lost it!).).
I would highly recommend these flashlights - especially over the old style lightbulb style lights. The are very efficient and look cool. I am sure Miracle Beam is a re-branded name given to this flashlight. The same flashlight probably has many names! Just be careful how much you pay for it. Prices range from $1 - ???. Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a wonderful day!
