Miracle-Grow All-Purpose Plant Food
When we moved to our new townhouse we were happy about having our own little semi-private backyard. We weren’t very happy with the dirty cement slab and packed dirt for a yard. We saw that some neighbors had planted flowers but we wanted more than that. We decided to grow, or attempt to grow, a nice lawn. Our first task was turning all of the soil, which was no easy task since it’s probably been walked on for well over 20 years. After that we mixed in peat moss and raked out all the rocks and clumps of clay. Finally, we were ready to put down the grass seed. To help the little guys along we decided to buy some fertilizer and ended up choosing Miracle-Grow All-Purpose Plant Food, mostly because of it’s well known name but also because we would be able to use it on our plants and flowers.
What You Get
With my box of Miracle-Grow Food I received a twist tie, a scooper with two different sizes of scoops, (one on each end) and of course the food in four separate plastic bags (as you can see I bought the large box!). I would much rather have a ziploc bag instead of using a twist tie and with the humidity here I put it in a sealable container. If you live in a high humidity area I suggest you do the same or else you might end up with a rock solid piece of fertilizer that you can’t use unless you whip out the chisel and hammer. I do however, give them kudos for at least supplying the twist tie for me.
Use
You can use Miracle-Grow on more than just your lawn. I decided to give my indoor plants a bit of fertilizer as well as my potted flowers. The most important thing to remember is that you use the large side of the scoop for outdoor plants and the small scoop for your indoor plants. It is 1 large scoop per gallon of water for outdoors and 1 small scoop per gallon for indoors. Simple enough right? What you do is dissolve the powder in water before applying it to your lawn/plants/flowers. Since our yard is extremely small we just used a watering can and did it by hand. If you have a larger lawn they have the dispensers that you place on the end of your hose so you don’t have all that manual labor. Before and after we poured the fertilized water we gave the lawn a little drink of regular water.
For my potted flowers and indoor plants I did the same thing. I brought my entire collection of plants outdoors and filled the watering can while I was in there (boy would I love an outdoor faucet). Since it is a two gallon watering can I used 2 small scoops of the Miracle-Grow and watered my indoor plants first. I then filled up the can again and just used one large scoop since there was fertilized water left over from the indoor plants. They recommend getting all leaves watered with Miracle-Grow as well as the roots so that it can feed the leaves directly, and I did just that.
You can use Miracle-Grow All-Purpose on any flowers (take note that they also have special food for roses and other flowers/plants), vegetables, fruits, shrubs, evergreens, houseplants, and more. I believe they tell you to fertilize every 2 weeks, which is about what we’ve been doing. Since our lawn is doing so well I doubt we will continue to feed every two weeks, we might end up doing it once a month.
Results
I thought we were going to have a battle getting this lawn started. With horrible hard soil like we have, one can have some major doubts. I was very happy at how fast our lawn germinated (5 or 6 days) as well as how much our potted flowers started filling out. Our lawn is now bright green and growing like weeds! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a simple fertilizer that you can use on just about everything that’s growing (except people, of course).
