Pros: Easy to apply, dustless, time release formula for continuous 3 month feeding.
Cons: A bit expensive but it should be worth it.
It's spring in the Northeast and this is the time of year to give your plants a quick shot of fertilizer so they get a good jump on the growing season. Your perennials have been dormant for several months and they need feeding. It's like giving them breakfast after they have been asleep for a long time. Plants, like us humans, like a good meal when they first get up in the morning so they have the energy for the upcoming growing season. I have had good luck with Miracle grow liquid plant foods, in the past, so this year I thought I'd try a long release type fertilizer. Since I've been very happy with Miracle grow, in the past, I figured that I'd give them a shot this spring. You only have one chance to get this right because after a month or so you will have missed the chance for this initial feeding.
Miracle-Gro Shake 'n Feed Plant Food is a balanced mixture of Nitrogen (10%), Phosphate (10%), Soluble potash (10%) and Sulfur (20%). The remainder of the ingredients are inert materials used to bind these ingredients together and to allow them to be absorbed over a three month time period.
This is a 10-10-10 fertilizer. It can be used for both outdoor and indoor plants. Because it is delivered in pellet form it is clean and neat without any dust that can go places other than that which you desire. You also don't need to worry as much about the wind as you would if you were applying a liquid spray fertilizer.
Each 4.5 pound container covers approximately 135 sq. feet. The easy pour spout, which is about 3 inches long, makes applying this product very simple. It comes out at a good rate so putting too much on your plants is very unlikely. When you run out you can refill the dispenser with a refill bag sold in you local garden center. The container also helps keep moisture out and preserving the strength of the fertilizer. Make sure that when you are done with using the product you close the spout firmly to keep the container air tight.

What I Recommend to Use it On.
Basically this plant food can be used anywhere in your garden or houseplants. 10-10-10 is a basic blend of nutrients that are acceptable for all plants.
This spring I went around to all my flower beds and removed the old dead growth. I then loosened the soil slightly around each plant. I put about a tablespoon of Miracle-Gro Shake 'n Feed Plant Food around each plant and mix into the soil very lightly. I had especially good timing this season because it rained the day after I applied the product to my beds. I have a lot of Day-Lily plants and they are growing very tall and green already and it's only been a week since application.
Just yesterday I went around to all my indoor plants and put about 1/2 teaspoon of pellets in each container prior to watering. I want to make sure not to put too much and burn the plants and I can always add a little more at a later date if I feel it is necessary.
This week I am starting some seeds inside and I'm going to try some of this fertilizer is with the potting mix to see how this works on new plants.
It's only been 10 days since I've applied Miracle-Gro Shake 'n Feed Plant Food to my outside plants and, like I mentioned earlier, I have been quite pleased. As the growing season progresses I will update this review if I find any important additions (or negatives). The only truly accurate review will be one that reports findings during the season not after just one application.
Miracle-gro has a good reputation among gardeners so I don't think I'll have anything bad to report.
