| lansky2000's Full Review: Mississippi Mud Black & Tan 1 Quart |
It's kinda weird that the greatest country on the planet hasn't been able to top Ireland's gift to the world, Guinness Stout. Take heart, though, beer lovers, the greatest city in the world has taken a shot at it and may or may not have missed the mark, depending on your taste for dark beer.
NYC's Arizona Beverage Company (?) has come up with a kickass concoction called Mississippi Mud (??). Why they didn't just call themselves the NYC Beverage Co. and name it something like Gowanus Canal Gunk is beyond me. Anyways, this is a sturdy-tasting beer that is far richer than dark brews like Shiner Bock, having a flavor coming real close to our beloved Guinness. For those of you who aren't familiar with stout, I wouldn't drop a fen on this until you try a taste somewhere first. Most Irish bars are more than glad to give you a free sip of tap beer as long as you're a paying customer. Don't wander in off the street to try some stout, though, or you'll get a taste of the Irish temper instead.
If you're a light drinker, you can probably split a bottle with a buddy and enjoy an uplifting experience with this brew. A two-fisted drinker will knock this down and walk away with a smile on his face and a song in his heart. It's got a nice kick to it and settles well as stout beer does, not foaming up in your belly or making regurgitation an uncomfortable afterthought. This may look rough in print, but dark beer can do things to lightweights or even regular beer drinkers who are sipping in unfamiliar territory.
I'm not sure how their distribution is, but we're getting this down here in Texas, so I imagine that this beer has built a pretty good market for itself. You're probably looking at about five bucks a quart bottle, but it's a good investment. Whether you're just looking for a stiff kick or something pleasant to mellow out with at home with your soulmate, this is something to check out.
