Quote from the Misto website...
Can I put other oils in the MISTO®?

"While the MISTO® was designed for olive oil it is not limited to just olive oil. You may put any kind of oil in the MISTO®. If you have oils with herbs, you should strain them first in a small strainer or cheese cloth to separate any particles that could clog the MISTO®. Also, the MISTO® is not just limited to oils either. You may put any type of cooking liquid in the MISTO® as long as nothing is suspended in it. For instance you may put some orange juice in the MISTO® as long as there is no pulp. This makes for a juicy tang on chicken. How about bourbon for a bourbon glaze on a turkey or a powdered ginger and soy sauce mixture for fish. Other liquids include sherry or marsala wine, lemon or lime juice, vinegars or even an oil and vinegar mixture for a salad. Be cooking creative! (Using something acidic like vinegar it's advisable to rub a little oil on the pump tube for lubrication)""

So it doesn't work with any other oil?? ony olive oil?? I don't really see the difference... but I want to know b/c I want a spray for my olive oil and one for canola oil.... but if it only works for olive oil... the only one...

Hey,
I was just looking on Amazon.com for one of these sprayers and the reviews on Amazon were not good on this product.

Do you still have it? Did it hold up over time?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Freak,
I loved your review. It was informative and witty (great title!), which makes it fun to read.
I had a Misto sprayer. I cook a lot and olive oil is a staple around here, so I thought it would work well in my home. I could never get the thing to spray sufficiently, it got all slimy, and I thought it was easier and less messy to drizzle oil than mist it. I chucked the whole mess into the trash can!
Glad you're having better luck than I!

Well, it does get slippery so you have to make sure that you have some extra paper towels around so you can get a good grip on it when you need to repump it to get more pressure. If there were some rubber grips on it - it would be a lot easier to use.

The website gives you information on how to strip it down and clean it. I wish I would have checked there first before I took mine apart. I was a little paranoid about cleaning it without knowing the basics. Since this is completely sealed I don't think that there is a chance that the oil would get funky or turn rancid inside the sprayer. As far as what you have in the closet, not sure how to protect that from breaking down. I tend to buy the smaller glass bottles and don't have a problem with it turning on me.

What a great review! I do things like that all the time, so I sympathize with your ignoring the instructions...

But I wonder how you cleaned the pumping mechanism. We use about a litre of olive oil a month, but in the summer, even using it that fast, the remaining oil sometimes gets rancid, even in the dark cupboard. How do you clean out rancid oil?

And doesn't the smooth cylindrical shape get very slippery?

I love gadgets, but have found that on the rare occasions that I put the olive oil directly on the salad (I usually make the vinaigrette in a jar first and then toss it with the salad,) I can drizzle it over the greens and then toss easily. So I agree that this is probably a fairly useless gadget.

So now I'm off to buy one!

Neat! And the review was terrific. I had to laugh about your first experience.

My husband made me a spray bottle for my veggie oil from one of the spray bottles he seems to collect. But this sounds super for the olive oil. I'll check it out in my Albertson's.

Thanks, Freak, an enjoyable review.

...the land of the free and the home of the gadget - from single pancake makers, to oil sprayers (what's wrong with the old fashioned way - pour and teaspoon?)...to cat chairs (yes, I read a review here on a chair just for a cat)...

...what AM I missing, having moved to the UK all those years ago?!

Cheers,

I'm off to make me some oily bread for a snack...

(Kidding!)

Super review - I'll stick with my non-fat PAM for now.
