About two years ago, my wife and I decided we needed a digital phone. We wanted a phone because I was starting a job where I was hardly at my desk and was on the road quite a bit. Since she was pregnant, she need some way to be able to contact me in case of emergency.
After shopping the different service providers, we decided that Aerial (now VoiceStream) was the best for us since we could get true per-second billing and a rate plan that fit our needs and budget. The only question was what phone to buy.
Since I had previously worked for Sprint PCS in its early days, I knew that Motorola made decent phones so I immediately looked into the models that they offered for PCS service. Unfortunately, we had two options...really expensive, or really shoddy. The expensive ones were the StarTac and the other tiny flip-phones, but we didn't really want to spend $200 on a phone that might get dropped or broken.
After ruling out the Motorolas, we looked at the Mitsubishi G100e. Aerial was running a special where we could pay $99 for the phone and get a $50 rebate so the total cost of $49 was much easier to swallow. As I looked the phone over, I was told that it had a timer (so you can track how close to going over your limit you are), an easy-to-use menu system, access to voicemail and messages, and numerous ring tones. The price and the features seemed to be exactly what we wanted, so we chose the Mitsubishi. We haven't regretted it since.
The good features of the phone include a backlit display for easy viewing at night, a flip cover to prevent accidental dialing while in a purse or pocket, and an excellent menu system that lets you navigate through your old and new messages, voicemail, and unanswered calls in a breeze. In addition, the speed dial allows you to program in more than 50 numbers so you can store all your friends and family's numbers for easy access. The last great feature is the adjustable volume. Not only can you change the tones to meet your desires, but you can control how loud the tones play with the push of a button.
The only bad feature of the phone are the fact that there is no vibrate feature for when you are in a meeting, but still need to be notified of messages. This was easily remedied by purchasing a "vibra-clip" from Best Buy for $20 which added this feature. Another thing that is mildly annoying is the fact that the antenna cannot be pushed in. It is always catching on things or poking you when it is clipped to your belt. While not a terrible con, I would recommend a retractable antenna if Mitsubishi decided to improve on it in the future.
For the $49 price that we paid for this phone, it has performed well. We have never had any mechanical problems with it and it has been dropped a couple of times. I highly recommend the leather carrying case for it since the plastic "window" in the carrying case will protect the phone's crystal from being scratched by keys and other things in your pocket/purse.
All-in-all, I highly recommend this phone. We are going to be buying our second phone soon and I sure hope that VoiceStream still carries the G100e because we will be repeat customers.
