| Mattog's Full Review: Mizuno Wave Goodbye |
First off I'm a guy and I'm actually reviewing the men's Wave Goodbye shoe...they're the same only different colors so don't give me no grief OK!!!!
I spent a lot of time looking for the right marathon racing flat for my big feet and I tried Adidas, Fila, Asics, New Balance, Saucony, everything but they were all too narrow. I normally wear a D or EE shoe and it is rare for a company to make a flat so wide. When I found these shoes I was very pleased with myself indeed; they fitted like a glove and performed very well...shame about the color though...PINK??? Euuuughhh.
There's not much you can say about the construction of flats, a thin sole and a lightweight upper. No bells and whistles like those clunky $150 motion control shoes that shops like to sell to new runners. The new Wave Goodbye does however have Mizuno's trademark stabilizing wave plate. The shoe would be better without this bit of heavy plastic but otherwise its a fine flat.
I laced them up for the first time in anger at the start of the Boston Marathon 2001 and set off on my merry way from Hopkinton to Boylston Street. The first 13 miles were great and I was right on my scheduled pace. At about 15 my feet started to get a little numb from the pounding but nothing to worry about. By mile 23 I couldn't feel anything below my knees and I was struggling along doing the survival shuffle....the shoes just didn't have enough forefoot cushioning for me. I weigh 140 and have a pretty neutral gait so I shouldn't be that heavy on my feet.
If you want to use these shoes for marathon racing you need to be light around the middle and light on your feet. They were marketed as a marathon shoe but I don't think they have enough cushioning unless you are super light. I'm going back to NB 829s for the long runs and keeping there babies for the 5ks and 10ks.
