I've owned the Morse TA64 4 Inch Hole Saw since building the attached garage on our previous home well over fifteen years ago. This hole saw has come in handy on several projects since, including the complete finish of the lower level of our current home. While the need to open up a full four inch hole is rare, it's certainly a handy tool to have available when necessary.
The manufacturer states that this hole saw is designed to cut through most any surface. Of course you can use this tool on any easy to drill surfaces such as wood, fiberglass, drywall, composites or fiberboard, including nail embedded wood. For my purposes as a homeowner, I can state you will not encounter an issue with any of the above materials. The folks at Morse also suggest this hole saw will cut through most types of machinable metal including stainless steel although I have not had any specific experience cutting through metal surfaces.
This particular hole saw falls into what the Morse company refers to as their Real McCoy® line. The line runs from as small as a 9/16" diameter through a full 6" choice. In addition, there are a number of metric sizes also available. The TA64 is the full 4" or 102mm size hole saw and similar to the rest of the line, it is constructed with a tough bi-metal material.
This hole saw is designed for a standard 1-1/2" cutting depth cut specifically for cutting through 2 x 4"s. I originally purchased this hole saw to cut through a basement floor header. Cutting with this saw allowed me to make a clean cut through the wood material and remove the piece easily. The manufacturer does also make a deep cut hole saw with a 1-7/8" depth cut for those specific needs. This regular depth hole saw has been sufficient for all my uses to date. If I have had the need to remove excess material such as was necessary on my original project, I have been able to clean out the 2" x 4" wood from the saw and continue through the remaining material without issue.
Many hole saws you may be considering have the need for a separate arbor which is used for attachment to your drill. I love the built-in arbor included with the saw. There's no need to search for and attach a separate arbor. This is extremely convenient saving both time and hassle. The built-in arbor has an imbedded set screw for the ability to slide in a pilot drill. The screw design on the built-in arbor makes for the ability to solidly lock down the pilot, eliminating the possibility of loosening during use.
The manufacturer's marketing babble states that the TA64 is designed with: Variable pitch positive rake teeth reduce vibration and clear chips to improve cutting speed. As a simple homeowner, I don't necessarily understand the engineering but there's no question this hole saw does a great job cutting through every material I have had the need to cut through. I have been rather surprised that this saw cuts as quickly and as well as any smaller sized hole saw I have used in the past. The resulting cut has always been sufficiently clean. After many years and several uses, the cutting teeth are still sharp with no noticeable loss of cutting ability, most likely due to the Morse TA64 4 Inch Hole Saw's M3 cutting edge.
As I stated earlier, I purchased this hole saw many years ago but I see the Morse company has not changed anything about this quality line of hole saws. The current price of the 4" TA64 runs anywhere from $22.00 to something north of $25.00. This seems a bit pricey for the homeowner that only has a rare use for this tool I can assure you it will be around forever. For those with a professional every day use, you too should find this a high quality, long lasting option well worth the price. I also like the fact my hole saw was made in the USA and as far as I can tell, this model continues to be made here.
I've attempted to give you the hole... I mean the whole story when it comes to the Morse TA64 4 Inch Hole Saw. Based on my positive experience with this hole saw for many years I have to offer four out of five stars and a unequivocal buy rating here at Epinions.
