I, too, received a sample of Crayola Model Magic at my local Hallmark. I didn't really know what it was and basically left it on my kitchen counter. A few days later while my two year old was in the middle of a melt-down and I was looking for a diversion, we gave Model Magic a test run. I'd also like to mention that I really do not care for play-doh because of how messy that it is. My daughter and I like this material a lot.
Model Magic is a spongy clay-like material. It is different from clay or play-doh in that it is not quite as dense. It can be formed into shapes which can then be air-dried to make your child's craft projects last.
My daughter rolled, mashed and pinched until her heart was content. She enjoyed making snakes with Model Magic the best. What I like best is how easy it is to clean up. It doesn't crumble as bad as play-doh does. Most of my Mommy friends, myself included, have play-doh crusted somewhere in their homes (usually in carpet). Model Magic seems to not adhere like play-doh does to these surfaces which makes clean-up a snap. Another nice feature is that when my daughter tried to taste the Model Magic, it didn't turn to "pasty goo" like play-doh does.
There are a few draw backs with Model Magic, though. First, it doesn't come in all of the colors that play-doh does. You get basic primary and secondary colors, but you can mix it to make other colors. Next, it doesn't come in re-sealable containers like play-doh or other clay like materials do. This presents a problem when you are cleaning up and would like to re-use it on another day. I have been storing it in zip-lock bags, which solves the problem of drying out, but I'd like it better if it was packaged in air tight tubs. Finally, it's moderately expensive for the amount of material that you get.
Overall, I have been so pleased with how CLEAN this material is, I have overlooked all of the draw backs. It has been clean enough to let our two year old play with a small amount on a car trip with wonderful results.
I'm not sure what the recommended ages are for this product. I would say that starting at 2 years would be fine with supervision. It works well for rainy day entertainment and just about any time for when you need a diversion.
If you have ever been fed up with play-doh, I highly recommend this product because I think you'll be pleased with the results.
