For years, ever since I was a small child learning to bake, I have always found the same problem with measuring cups. The one I want is either dirty, missing in one of many drawers, or hiding out in the flour or sugar container. Almost always, I would find the poor lonely 1/3 or 2/3 cups, but never the 3/4, 1/2 or 1 cup that I wanted. Where do they go? Do gnomes come and steal them too for their grand plot to make a profit? Inquiring baker's minds want to know!
After becoming frustrated about this one day, I was venting to my friend on the phone. She then gave me the best present of all, my own Adjustable Scoop. What is it you may ask? Here are the features, as I came to learn from her when she gave it to me:
(The features list is information Pampered Chef from materials they provided to me in hard copy, not online. All commentary is my own, or taken off the product itself.)
Standard and Metric Measurements: I'm not a metric fan, but I am a fan of course of standard measurements. In my hand I held a scoop that gives me 1/4, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and 1 cup. Ok, so there is no 1/3 cup, but I could find that one anyway!
Slide Locks/Locking Cover: Ok, this is also known as 'pronounced detents' from the manufacturer, Pampered Chef, but I want everyone to understand including myself! This feature means that when you slide the cover to the measurement that you want, it will lock in place. This is really important when you need 1/2 a cup of sugar or especially flour. It is not a lightweight material like water, and you do not want it slipping out of place.
Dishwasher Safe: This product is made completely of plastic. I recommend that you slide the cover to at least the 1/2 cup, if not 1/4 cup position, and then snap the cover off the top. Then you can place both pieces on the top rack of your dishwasher. When the cycle is done, just dry and snap back together! Voila!
Use and Care: All Pampered Chef products come with a manila card that tells you about the product, how to care for it, and on the back is a recipe.
Exclusive: This is not available elsewhere! It is designed, produced and patented just for the Pampered Chef, and made in the USA.
Any problems with this gadget?
Unlike my old measuring cups, you probably do not want to measure liquid ingredients with this. I mainly used my old cups for sugar and flour, and even shortening. I've now found a better product for shortening, and other sticky as well as liquid ingredients. It is called the Measure-All® Cup, plus it goes up to 2 cups. While it disappointed me that liquids do not measure well with this scoop, it is still doing the job I need it to with dry ingredients, and I always have the measurement that I need.
I also have found it a bit hard to switch to using this scoop after being used to the other stacking measuring cups I've used all my life. But the kids are now enjoying their new bath toys (I gave them both my yellow and orange sets - well, the ones I could find at least!) and I'm now happy with my new gadget. It still feels funny holding it, with a curved handle and all, but you deal and get used to the joy of having something you can find!
But do I recommend it for you?
I will say that this is probably not a product for everyone. My mom does not care for it, and is happy to stick to searching through the jumble of her drawers for measuring cups. I have other friends that like it, and others that could take it or leave it.
I suggest that if you are the least bit interested, talk to your friendly neighborhood Pampered Chef Consultant about it. Plan a show at your home, and ask to make a recipe ahead of time for your show that would involve the use of this product (and any others you want to test out!) If you like it, get it! If you don't like it, don't get it! I know that far too many of us have too many kitchen gadgets that we barely touch, so do not add to the clutter unless you are really going to use this one! It seems a bit pricey to me at $8.00, but if I do not have to go out and replace the 3/4 cup that keeps disappearing, then I think it will be worth it in the long run!
