OK. Let's start with the basics - Molière is a French movie set in 17th Century France with sumptuous sets and costumes and outstanding cinematography and acting. It's also at times hilariously funny and heart wrenchingly sad. Oh, and it's in French with sub-titles. So if you'd rather rip your own head off than have to spend the effort reading English from the screen then that's your loss, best I tell you now to save you the effort of reading the rest of this review. I hear the new Rambo movie's a romp...
All gone? So now I can assume you either speak French (bonjour, mes amis) or enjoy foreign movies with sub-titles as long as they're good. Splendid. Well you're in luck, because Molière is a wonderful, beautiful movie about the imagined early life of famous actor and playwright Molière. It features a stellar cast of wonderful actors, led by Romain Duris from L'Auberge Espagnol who plays the inspired actor as the film follows his life from being cast into debtor's jail in Paris, to being rescued by the rich merchant Monsieur Jourdain in order to teach him the fine arts of acting. Along the way Molière falls in love, acts like a horse and helps everyone around him learn valuable life lessons, all in the tragically comic manner of one of Molière's own plays. This is not surprising as the movie reconstructs a few lost months in the playwright's own life from his own plays.
Molière is a wonderful movie, mixing deep emotional stories with complex, believable characters and great humor. The sets are beautiful, and the 'beautiful' people are ugly inside. C'est formidable! [It's great!]
