The XR 100 is a great bike for a beginner. I started with it and have since moved on, but did encourage a number of my friends to grab this bike. There are three guys now in our "armature mountain bike pack" and they have been riding the bikes hard with little to no problem.
The biggest problem with the bike has been the wheels. If you come down really hard on them they tend to go out of round. Fixing them at our local bike shop is about $10.00 per wheel. If you get this bike start setting aside a little money each week and in time purchase a new set of wheels that are stronger.
There has been a lot of discussion about buying this bike vs. shopping at a local bike shop. Here’s my thought. I’ll add that by nature I’m a road cyclist. I shopped at every bike shop in the area and traveled to Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart… I looked over the bikes and the components and came to this conclusion… unless you spend $450.00 or more you are getting the same quality bike no matter where you go. The wheels on the low end Bike Shop Bike are the same as the Wheels on the XR 100. The Shimano components on the XR 100 are the same as those on the low end Bike Shop Bikes.
I asked the guy at one shop what exactly the difference was between his bike and a walmart bike and the only think he really had to say was that he would make adjustments for 6 months and would be able to answer questions for me. I don’t know that that’s worth the extra initial cost.
Now back to the XR 100…. It’s a good bike.
You may be wondering why I moved on to a new bike... I decided to go for a slightly lighter bike. The XR 100 is a little on the heavy side. I'm still riding a mongoose and loving every moment of it.
