| bradshawcl's Full Review: Mongoose Butterfly Summer 12" Girl's Bike |
Recently, my oldest daughter (who is 4) had been asking for a big girl bike. I told her I would look around and if I saw one her size I would get it for her. Thats when I ran across the 12 Mongoose Butterfly Summer Bike at Wal-Mart store for $43.63. Plus the tax rate of 9.75% here in Tennessee, I ended up paying $47 something.
This bike was already put together (a definite bonus in my book), although we did have to do a little seat and handlebar adjusting before we were ready to ride. An instruction manual comes with the bike, giving you detailed instructions on how to assemble the bike.
Well, this bike has a steel frame and comes in different colors. The one pictured here is an aqua color, but the one I purchased has a deep purple colored frame- but they do have the aqua version at Wal-Mart also.
As I said before, this bike is purple, and it also has rubber coated handlebars that are purple also, with mongooses etched on them. The bike has white, 12 rubber tires, with white 4 plastic training wheels also. The training wheels can be removed.
The seat is white with a silver glitter top that has a purple butterfly on it. It measures about 7 inches wide at the widest point, and almost 8 inches long.
The pedals are also white, and they have yellow reflectors on them also.
The doll seat (which can also be removed) measures 10 in. x 6 in. at the widest point is teal green. It also has shimmery pink and purple butterflies of various sizes on it. To place your doll or stuffed animal in, simply place them in the seat and then thread an 18 inch hot pink ribbon through two vertical slots in the back of the seat. This ribbon has Velcro closures on the ends, making your doll safe and secure while riding. The ribbon is easy to thread through the slots, and my 4 year old can do it on her own.
This bike also comes with a handlebar bag, which in our case is hot pink and measures 10 inches long and is removable by a clasp. Also, there is a small 1 and ½ inch wide bell located on the left handlebar. To make it ding, simply push the small lever forward.
Our bike does not have streamers, I find that they get way too nasty, but they do have these bikes with streamers at Wal-Mart.
Here is what Wal-Mart.com had to say about the bike:
What little girl woudn't love this bike complete with doll set? Its steel construction and pad set make for a durable, safe bike.

Experience
As with any bike, I suggest strongly that you wear a helmet, and knee and elbow pads. As I explain it to Pookie- no helmet- no riding. So, she knows that she has to wear her helmet and pads in order to ride. The only place we have been riding is our carport, until she gets used to it.
I find that this is a good bike for her, she had kind of outgrown the tricycle, and since she is only 36 inches tall, she was not ready for a 16 inch bike. She has good control with this bike. She has only fallen off once or twice.
I was really glad that the folks down at Wal-Mart had assembled this bike, but I would be sure to check everything over before riding to make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight. My husband and I are not really all that good at putting things together, he tends to just drag it all out and start messing around, where as I read directions.
I need to note also here that this bike will fit in a car trunk (I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima, and it fit just fine). But, I do find the bike a little heavy (of course, I only weigh about 90 lbs., so its not surprising that it is heavy to me.) Anyway, on the other hand, I like the steel frame because it is not easy for Pookie to flip over on it.
Also, I really like the doll seat on the back, in fact the checkout person at Wal-Mart did too- plus, its removable, for when your child grows out of that stage.
So far, no real problems at all with the bike, but we have only had it about a month and a half.
I really did not think $43 was bad for a bike, I am sure we will be riding it for a few years, plus we have another daughter that can ride it.
Highly recommended for the girly girl in your life. Cute bike.
