| retta1967's Full Review: Monopoly |
My husband and my two oldest daughters and I like to play Monopoly sometimes on our family game nights. Now let me tell you I usually end up losing on this game every time to my husband and so do the girls. I think that it's mainly because I like to take it easy on the girls for they are age 9 and 10, but my husband is a no holds barred kind of guy. Plus he just loves to pay me back for when I beat him in Scrabble.
Monopoly is known as one of the most popular games in the world. I was reading last week in my daughter's Time for kids magazine about a contest that was held in Canada for the World's best Monopoly player. A guy named Yutaka Okada from Japan beat out 37 people from 38 countries to win the title. Now that is a lot of countries that play this game. I definitely believe Parker Brothers knew they had a winner on their hands when they came out with this game over 65 years ago. If you haven't played the game then I guess you would like to know what the game is all about.
Object of the game and what is needed to play
The object of the game is to become the wealthiest player through buying, renting, and selling property. The game comes with a board, 2 dice, tokens, 32 houses and 12 hotels. There are Chance and Community chest cards, a title deed card for each property on the board, and play money.
Benefits of this Game
I think this game helps to teach our children how to handle money. It's also a good lesson for adults. Knowing how to make the best investments and learning what bad investments costs you helps to teach you about every day life as an adult.
Before Playing
Before you can play you need to get the Monopoly board ready by placing it on the table and putting the Chance and Community Chest cards face down on the spaces they belong in. A banker that has been selected needs to pass out $1500 of the play money to each player divided the way the game says to do. The banker has to keep track of their own money separate from the money in the bank. The banker is also in charge of taking care of the deeds, mortgages, and paying out the salaries and collecting money from taxes and other things.
Each player also has to choose a token to use for them to use for the game. There are a variety of tokens to choose from including a hat, car, boat, thimble, and a variety of others. Many of the newer versions I think have added some new ones I don't know about. I prefer to use the car myself but you can choose what you like.
Playing the game
After determining who goes first the players roll their dice and start on their quest for fortune. Whenever they land on a property they either can buy it, have to pay rent to someone else for landing on it, or they can just sit there. If they land on a community chest card or chance card they have to draw and do as the card says. Sometimes these cards may be good other times they might send you to the space known as jail. When going to jail you will be given choices on how to get out of jail or you can use a get out of jail card you may have drawn.
The properties on the board are color coded. Each color is worth a different amount and has either 2 or 3 properties that are the same color. When a player gets all the properties of the same color they are allowed to put houses and hotels on their properties allowing for them to charge higher rent. This is usually how others end up going bankrupt because they can't pay the rent.
There are also 4 railroads and 2 utilities places on the board. Owning all the railroads or both the utilities also allows you to collect more rent. The difference with these two properties though is you can not place houses or motels on them.
The game also has a couple of tax places and a free parking that you can just sit at and not do a thing. A player gets a $200 dollar income every time they pass go, unless they are directed to go to jail in which they can't collect the money.
The game basically keeps going with a lot of wheeling and dealing and collecting and doing basically what life has to offer. Some people may want to set a time limit on this game for it can take a while to play. If you are like me, well sometimes this game can get too close to the heart if you lose in the real world when dealing with money. People have been known to just get really mad over this game, not me , but I have seen some family members do this.
My thoughts
I think this game is great. Even though it's recommended for ages 8 to adult I do think it can be a bit much for an 8 year old to play. I think that anyone that loves to deal with money and try to make money, and basically just wants to feel like they make money will love this game. It's a little more tense then a lot of games but it can be a lot of fun as long as everyone agrees to the same rules and just doesn't take it too personal when they go bankrupt. I still rather play Scrabble myself but my family and I do enjoy playing this game also.
