| Magick1's Full Review: Monopoly: Junior Edition Board Game |
We acquired this game during the holiday season. I wasnt sure what it would be like, but knowing the Monopoly name, I thought, extremely long game play, boring for a toddler, and just too much to handle in a regular week night. Boy, was I wrong!
The Game
This game, like Monopoly is suited for 2 4 players, but ages 5 8 years old! Its a rectangular playing board, and it is a nice friendly, low price game to play!
The game consists of 4 different pawns that represent amusement park rides. There is a roller coaster car, a carousel horse, a log flume boat and a bumper car. Doesnt this just sound like a lot of fun already!
There is one dice and 48 ticket booths instead of homes or hotels! There are 4 colors, blue, yellow, red and green. There are 12 ticket booths of each color. You have money, ones, twos, threes, fours and fives.
The cost of the properties, or amusement park places, ranges between 2 and 4 dollars. You have a 6 spots where you can land and get a chance card. There is a free time spot, and lunch spot and a spot where you buy lunch. The utilities are actually sponsored events like fireworks or water show that you have to pay to see.
There is a go square and you collect $2 when you pass it. The railroads are roll again spots. You have fun places like Echo Canyon Coaster for the Park Place and Supersonic Space Flight for Broadway spot that you would see on the normal Monopoly game board.
There are only 2 spots in a color grouping for the properties. For example, 2 orange, 2 dark pink, 2 blue, 2 purple, 2 yellow, 2 red, 2 green and finally 2 light blue.
During play, you roll the dice and move your pawn accordingly. If you land on it and its not already holding a ticket booth, you can buy it and put one up. If you draw a chance card, you will likely receive a ride on the railroad or a free ticket booth, where you can go to the color shown on the chance card and put a booth there without having to buy it for the stated price. If someone already has ticket booths on both of those colored squares, you get to kick them off of one and then put your ticket booth up.
Like the regular Monopoly game, if you own the entire color block of properties (or have ticket booths on them all), you collect rent that is more than just the regular property price listed. It is double.
For example, I won the blue property by getting a chance card that stated free ticket booth on blue properties and I chose Echo Canyon Coaster since no ticket booth was set up yet. I go around the board and land on the other blue property Supersonic Space Flight and I buy it for the price showing on the board - $5.00. I now have ticket booth on both of the blue properties. Therefore, if someone lands on my properties with the ticket booths, they will pay double the purchase price. Both blues are $5, therefore, the person would owe me $10. If I only owned one, they would just pay me the $5 for that particular purchase price which is listed on the board.
There are no property cards and there is not a mortgage option or selling the hotels or homes options. So, that makes the game fairly easy for the younger set and you!
Overall Impressions
I absolutely adore this game. It allows me to play a form of Monopoly without having to have the long TIME commitment. Time is pretty sparse with all of the activities most families deal with currently. But, being able to sit down after supper and play a 20 minute game with your child(ren) is really priceless.
Its easy to learn, you dont have to worry about the extra pieces of mortgaging, selling or building homes or hotels, etc. And, its at some basic math levels that toddlers can play this with ease and they can boost their math skills without feeling like you are drilling them on math! They are getting accustomed to buying things and what to do if they run out of money and learning how to be great team game players and not be a gloating winner or a bad attitude loser. It gives me and my hubby a chance to show our daughter how to win and lose graciously. These are lessons that just cannot be beat.
If you want to add a fun game to your familys game collection, you should really check out Monopoly Junior. I think you will find it as enjoyable as I do to play with your toddler or preschooler! Our 4 1/2 year old loves it!
~Thanks for spending time with me today!~
